I had a dream. In it huge shadowy players were throwing gigantic dice. They were like figures from a Greek vase, but they were enormous, and black figures which were each a frightening void. Their presence was really an absence which I was frightened would absorb and annihilate me. The dice were transparent, and through their sides I could see universes and planets, suns and species. Novae spawned galaxies in some, life emerged from sullen and overcast seas in others. For some reason there was a difference in scale between some dice and others. Humans appeared inside some dice with their obsessions – hopes, schemes, rivalries, fears and faiths, things normally hidden but now clearly visible. The dice were tumbling, the numbers on their sides faintly glimpsed. The board was below. The game was unknown.
