Sheila Heathcote was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1953 to American parents — a flight attendant mother (TWA), and geologist father, who came from Pennsylvania to explore the jungles of Colombia and create the first survey of gas and oil resouces in the country. The family returned to the US where Sheila attended fashion college in Atlanta, Georgia in 1971, then completed Nursing School (as a Registered Nurse) in 1978. Sheila began her nursing career in New York City, and later went to Honolulu’s St. Francis Medical Center as a Traveling Nurse in 1989.

Sheila lived on Maui, where she worked as a medic and press agent for the Professional Boardsailors Association (PBA International) for the World Cup of Windsurfing contests around the world, and began her journalism career writing for sports magazines and doing radio broadcasts, and later TV broadcasts for ESPN. She also reported for the Kauai Times, The Garden Island Newspaper (both on Kauai), and was a stringer for the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star Bulleten. Her first book, Tales of the Tempests: The Hurricanes of Kauai was published in 2002. Sheila is currently traveling in Colombia where she hope to retire.
