<p dir="ltr">There is, of course, some legacy prudishness to autocorrect—the tendency, for example, of <i>hell</i> to become <i>he’ll</i>—but for the most part the global menagerie has, in its <a href="https://sullydish.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dish_dyac.jpg"><img data-attachment-id="253168" data-permalink="https://dish.andrewsullivan.com/?attachment_id=253168" data-orig-file="https://sullydish.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dish_dyac.jpg?w=301&#038;h=340" data-orig-size="320,361" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="dish_dyac" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://sullydish.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dish_dyac.jpg?w=301&#038;h=340?w=266" data-large-file="https://sullydish.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dish_dyac.jpg?w=301&#038;h=340?w=320" class="alignright wp-image-253168 " src="https://sullydish.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dish_dyac.jpg?w=301&#038;h=340" alt="dish_dyac" width="301" height="340" srcset="https://sullydish.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dish_dyac.jpg?w=301&amp;h=340 301w, https://sullydish.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dish_dyac.jpg?w=133&amp;h=150 133w, https://sullydish.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dish_dyac.jpg?w=266&amp;h=300 266w, https://sullydish.files.wordpress.com/2014/07/dish_dyac.jpg 320w" sizes="(max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px" /></a> unflagging vulgarity, produced a linguistic corpus that skews blue. Where [patent inventor Dean] Hachamovitch did away with the scutwork, the new autocorrect introduces the slutwork and the smutwork. When one reads such hilarious-error collections as Damn You Autocorrect, one can’t help but feel skeptical. Some entries beggar the imagination; it’s hard to believe that Volvos could become vulvas as often as they seem to. But even if we assume a significant rate of fraud, we are forced to conclude—given that autocorrect draws from group behavior—that the unpublished typing of our society is more unpublishable than we ever imagined.</p>
