This recent spate of “right wing” victories which includes Brexit, Trump, and the European nationalists is part of the same global phenomenon which produced Modi.

It almost seems too obvious to point out how similar Trump and Modi are but I haven’t seen many people in my circles saying it. Probably because I hang out mostly with Americanized NRI liberals in the Brahmin class (as per Moldbug’s schema, not Chaturvarna). These people love Modi and hate Trump and want to avoid finding the obvious similarities and connections. There are some articles tracing out the connections. Mostly in condemnatory tones. But some sources are saying the exact opposite as well, which is totally ridiculous. So lets go over some of the basics.

Victory of the Edgelords: The first major similarity is their negative public branding, and the material causes for why that sort of branding was possible in the first place. Trump and Modi both are both considered bigots by their liberal opponents (particularly in English language media which has been totally captured by leftist establishment forces), and have garnered support from right wing radicals. In Trump’s case this mostly centers around his rhetoric, though he is also favored by far right groups like (numerically and politically insignificant) KKK or the (much more numerous and significant) Alt-Right. In Modi’s case it derives from his institutional connection with the RSS and Hindutvadis in general, and his role in the Gujarat riots. In both cases this seemed to have damaged their reputations and election chances at the time. They were considered outsiders with hickish attitudes by their own liberal countrymen, and scary nationalists by neoliberals in other countries. Remember how under Obama the US denied Modi’s visa? Well Trump narrowly escaped the same fate at the hands of the UK parliament. Ultimately in both cases this politically correct negative branding failed to stop the candidate, as what the media establishment portrayed as a negative and bigoted campaign was interpreted very differently by the voting public.

Weak Opposition: There is also a sense in which both Trump and Modi were helped along by the fact that their opponents were so despised and electorally weak. Under different historical conditions they probably would have fared somewhat poorly. But in India the population was so fed up with the status quo that the normal Congress coalition has been splintered omnidirectionally. In the United States the Democratic base was pretty unexcited about Hillary, and didn’t come out to the polls for her in the requisite numbers. Some of Bernie Sanders’ supporters actually ended up going to Trump, or just staying home. Third party voting was up. The left in Europe is flagging too, which will probably help right wing parties if they can just preform merely adequately.

Nationalism, Culture, and Borders: This one can be done quickly as well. Both candidates were openly nationalist and have made border issues a priority. “Make in India,” “Achhe din aane waale hain,” “Make America Great Again,” and “America First” are all different manifestations of the same impulse. Modi has made some progress on the Bangladeshi border issue, but he will have a difficult time actually addressing the immigration problem because of how federated India is, and how uncooperative Mamata Banerjee is. Nevertheless based on the border issue he has activated the Hindu vote of Assam, and many are suspicious about the emergence of a Hindu vote bank in Bengal for the same reason. Both feel no need to apologize for supporting the majority demographic, especially in opposition to radical Islam.

So first of all, my thanks go out to everyone who’s contributed a piece this past year. This blog would not be what it is without you. I learn a lot from all of you, and I value your ideas. In case you were wondering, the undisputed traffic king around these parts is Rob, especially for his posts on Gamergate.
Secondly, thanks to all our readers and those who have linked or blogroll’d us. Sorry nobody reads you Ed!

We’re averaging over a thousand pageviews a day now, which is awesome. If there are changes you’d like to see, topics you’d like to see covered, writers we should get, or have any other kind of comment or criticism, I’d like to hear from you in the comments.

On a personal note, today I was received into the Catholic Church.

I had the vague sense that I ought to choose one of the counter-reformation martyrs of England and Wales, and it has been wonderful getting to know some of them, or at least as well as one can with Internet resources alone.

“National Apostasy,” by John Keble

The point really to be considered is, whether, according to the coolest estimate, the fashionable liberality of this generation be not ascribable, in a great measure, to the same temper which led the Jews voluntarily to set about degrading themselves to a level with the idolatrous Gentiles? And, if it be true anywhere, that such enactments are forced on the Legislature by public opinion, is APOSTASY too hard a word to describe the temper of that nation?

The same tendency is still more apparent, because the fair gloss of candour and forbearance is wanting, in the surly or scornful impatience often exhibited, by persons who would regret passing for unbelievers, when Christian motives are suggested, and checks from Christian principles attempted to be enforced on their public conduct. I say, ‘their public conduct,’ more especially ; because in that, I know not how, persons are apt to be more shameless, and readier to avow the irreligion that is in them ;—amongst other reasons, probably, from each feeling that he is one of multitude, and fancying, therefore, that his responsibility is divided.

For example:—whatever be the cause, in this country of late years, (though we are lavish in professions of piety,) there has been observable a growing disinclination, on the part of those bound by VOLUNTARY OATHS, to whatever reminds them of their obligation; a growing disposition to explain it all away. We know what, some years ago, would have been thought of such uneasiness, if betrayed by persons officially sworn, in private, legal, or commercial life. If there be any subjects or occasions, now, on which men are inclined to judge of it more lightly, it concerns them deeply to be quite sure, that they are not indulging or encouraging a profane dislike of God’s awful Presence ; a general tendency, as a people, to leave Him out of all their thoughts.

They will have the more reason to suspect themselves, in proportion as they see and feel more of that impatience under pastoral authority, which our Savior Himself has taught us to consider as a never-failing symptom of an unchristian temper. ‘He that heareth you, heareth Me ; and he that despiseth you, despiseth Me’ (S. Luke x. 16). Those words of divine truth put beyond all sophistical exception, what common sense would lead us to infer, and what daily experiences teaches;—that disrespect to the Successors of the Apostles, as such, is an unquestionable symptom of enmity to Him, Who gave them their commission at first, and has pledged Himself to be with them for ever. Suppose such disrespect general and national, suppose it also avowedly grounded not on any fancied tenet of religion, but on mere human reasons of popularity and expediency, either there is no meaning at all in these emphatic declarations of our Lord, or that nation, how highly soever she may think of her religion and morality, stands convicted in His sight of a direct disavowal of His Sovereignty.

Social Media: Another quick one, and related to the above point. Modi (2) and Trump both use social media avidly themselves. But their supporters are even more passionate and unfiltered online. Trump won the troll vote. He had 4chan on his side, and he had legions of volunteer twitter propagandists. Modi achieved the same thing in an earlier time. He activated social media to his advantage and has loyal legions of Bhakts and “internet Hindus” on Twitter. In both cases the harsh and sometimes abusive words of internet brigades were the source of accusations of bigotry on the part of the candidates themselves. The trolls don’t care about political correctness, even if it reflected poorly on their candidates. In both countries the majority has felt shamed and guilted needlessly for their identity and decided to lash out online in a chaotic and offensive manner. “White Guilt” and “Hindu Guilt” are perfectly analogous in this context, and the brazen character of the reactionary online movements against these concepts is quite similar.

Shifting Class Coalitions–Modi: Class is ultimately the most vital factor to observe in these elections. They both won in part by appealing to lower class members of the dominant demographic group in their country. Populist majoritarianism of a sort. This is their most important similarity, as it is probably the material basis of the broader shift towards right wing parties around the world. Modi made a strong effort to expand the BJP’s portion of the Dalit vote. Ramdas Athawale, former leader of the Dalit Panther Movement defected from the Congress alliance and now serves on Modi’s cabinet. From the Times of India in 2014:

“Bahraich, Shravasti, Kaiserganj, Gonda, Balrampur, Dumariyaganj, Basti and Gorakhpur have a sizable chunk of OBC voters (17-21%). These voters are highly influenced by Modi. The party candidates have also realized the Modi impact and are busy projecting Modi as a person with simple living and high thinking like Sardar Patel.”

…

“From Basti and Dumariyaganj to Gorakhpur, backward voters have been enthusiastic about Modi. Kailash Nath Verma of Basti said, “In assembly elections, I backed SP. But now the wave has changed. I am supporting the ‘chaiwallah’ of my caste.” Shivkumar, a dedicated Congress worker till last year, is now a BJP activist. He said: “Modi is the acceptable leader of backward class.” He further said, “Congress is a party of king while Modi is a ground leader.””

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence like this to suggest that Modi secured a larger portion of the lower class Hindu vote than the BJP would normally have gotten. This is not immediately obvious when you examine poll results for support by educational attainment and income:

Some readers may know me from my intermittent blogging from about 2009 to 2011 for The American Conservative. Others might even know me for my frequent appearances in roughly the same period at Mondoweiss. And perhaps a few might know me for my first book that was released in 2011, Rabbi Outcast: Elmer Berger and American Jewish Anti-Zionism. In April, the book I’ve been at work on ever since will be released, The Socialist Party of America: A Complete History.

Introducing myself effectively is in many ways exceptionally timely this month with the demise of The New Republic. As an intellectually curious young person who came of age at virtually the very moment of the September 11 attacks, I learned to have a particular hatred for The New Republic at the tail end of its recently much-ballyhooed heyday. I’m mature enough now to have an appreciation for those who are lamenting the apparent demise of the public intellectual and their forum in political magazines as a matter of principle. But in all candor I remain blind to the greatness and romance surrounding TNR, and in particular Leon Wieseltier’s back-of-the-book.

And the reason for this, frankly, is because my adolescent romance for the life of the mind – from politics to literature to ideas – was with The American Conservative. I still remember well when I was 17, first seeing and reading the first issue in the magazine section of Borders at White Flint Mall; two institutions now joined in meeting their reward by TNR, which memorably blasted the premier of TAC as “Buchanan’s surefire flop” (only in the recent coverage did I realize that this was a tasteless reference to The Producers, in the company of their charming headline on the vindication of Iraq realists in 2004, “Springtime for Realism”).

Some background is in order: I was a Jewish kid from Bethesda, Maryland who got his GED as soon as he turned 16. I was in community college for the next two years at the same time I was actively pursuing a highly unstable brew of radical involvements on both the left and right, fancying myself some kind of journalist-revolutionary (like 12-year old Henry Hill, I was living in a fantasy). The critical point of departure for my intellectual journey was some time just after 9/11, as I was becoming enamored with Justin Raimondo, who proved a formative influence to be sure, and discovering that his seemingly half-crazed notion about the Trotskyist roots of neoconservatism was very much true – it turned out my father knew several of them through the Harvard Young People’s Socialist League (Elliott Abrams, Josh Muravchik, and Daniel Pipes well; Bill Kristol just slightly. Anyone curious as to why he didn’t become a neocon should read his recent book on new urbanism).

In other words, the much-storied New York Jewish intellectual tradition, that Carol Kane assured the young Alvy Singer was a wonderful cultural stereotype to be reduced to, was in many ways a birthright. And yet I fell in love with TAC. In that first year or two as America was being conquered by Iraq, I still had high hopes for the Green Party, and even on the eve of TAC’s premier was startled to see Rod Dreher’s “Crunchy Cons” cover story at National Review and knowing there had to be a much, much, much better forum for this (by the time the book came out in 2006, I was of course well past recognizing that the typical figure covered in the book, if asked why they weren’t involved with the Green Party, would simply answer “because I like a steak every now and then”). When I was 18 and first living on my own, I subscribed to four magazines – The American Conservative, The Progressive, Chronicles, and an intriguingly semi-serious short-lived left-anarchist bi-monthly called Clamor.

I hardly need revisit the intellectual climate that surrounded the launching of the Iraq War, and why it was no contest between TAC and any more mainstream magazine – even the sincerely antiwar and often thoughtful liberals at The American Prospect could never stir the intellectual passions. Nor does a great deal need to be said here about what slowly but surely disillusioned me with the radical left, though to this day a large part of me is mystified as to why Bill Kauffman (or for that matter Jim Webb, at least in his career as a politician) is considered anything but a perfectly kosher man of the left.

What should be said about what made TAC stand out through all of this, and endure in my affections, was that it gave me in my formative, college-age years a way of understanding the world, but more importantly of the history I was living through. Two pieces deserve special mention in this regard – “That 1914 Feeling” by Martin Sieff (April 7, 2003) and “The Fall of Modernity” by Michael Vlahos (February 26, 2007).

Still, why The American Conservative? The answer comes from an unlikely source – the not-terrible but in many ways misleading 1997 documentary Arguing the World, whose subjects Justin Raimondo once memorably described as the biggest narcissists since Narcissus. In one interview snippet, the old Partisan Review hand Lionel Abel speaks to the inherent virtue in the life of the mind of that which is interesting, and that even as an oldster he will still not abandon this principle. Yet another moment in Arguing the World drives home how this was especially salient to TAC’s back-of-the-book, the equal of any rival, giving me my whole education in literature and ideas.

Irving Howe (of whom my father was a friend and admirer) recalls in the film how the review section of Partisan Review gave him the best education one could ask for – Orwell, Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Dwight Macdonald – “while the Communists were reading palookas like Howard Fast.” I may have an awful lot of chutzpah in saying so, but I take every bit the same pride in what I learned from TAC’s back-of-the-book – Waugh, Wodehouse, Oakeshott, Gore Vidal, D. H. Lawrence, Robert Nisbet, Herbert Butterfield – while the Leon Wieseltier fan club was reading palookas like Saul Bellow and Cynthia Ozick.

I think from the beginning I always came back to the Burkean and Kirkian sensibility where TAC stood, but my evolution was certainly an uneven one. It was in my eclectic youth that I took Austrian economics the most seriously while never totally buying it, but at the same time that I still earnestly believed I was some kind of socialist of the earnest, vintage, trade unionist and anti-totalitarian kind (not yet fully grasping that this species was extinct by the early postwar era). I was completely wound up in enthusiasm for Ron Paul in his first campaign in 2008 (or 2007 really), never once thinking he’d be President but convinced it was turning all of American politics on its head, though time may yet tell. I took a different path than most around TAC in grappling with Obama and his first term if I’ve largely met them back around the bend by now, though I feel vindicated in my view from the outset that the problem has come more from how liberalism has changed than from Obama himself.

More important than any of this, however, was how my mature intellectual pursuits were ultimately shaped by TAC and the intellectual wealth it has given me. Nagging at me from the beginning was the apparent discrepancy between the love of the old America central to the values of TAC, particularly of course as expressed by the incomparable Bill Kauffman; and any kind of Jewish identity, which appeared to be irreconcilable to being unambiguously on the side of peace and non-intervention.

The major revelation came in discovering the subject of my first book: Reform Jewish Anti-Zionism, as ultimately organized in the American Council for Judaism (ACJ), almost totally lost to Orwell’s memory hole and appearing to me as what I had to one degree or another been looking for throughout my intellectual journey – American Jews who resisted the Zionist revolution in American Jewish identity, meaning an identity bound up in the sacred story of American nationalism following the Second World War. To be sure, the ACJ did not fit so very neatly into the prevailing historical narrative of the “old right,” but the ways in which it did and did not were in great measure what so fascinated me and trained me in the rigors of historical scholarship.

Yet of greatest significance was the discovery, completely exhumed from the archives, of the old Jewish Socialist allies of the ACJ. And this in turn led me back to what I had for so long said I wanted to write some day, a complete history of the Socialist Party of America. I referred earlier to my father’s long ago affiliation with the Young People’s Socialist League – well, to this day, being a shade to the right of The American Prospect if only just as slightly more moderate than James Howard Kunstler, my father will still insist he is a socialist (to which I’d reply “Am I? Is anyone?”). A great deal of family background, including of some distinction in the labor movement on my mother’s side, reinforced this interest as it coincided with my earlier radical involvements.

Indeed, very early on I recognized that so many of the stalwarts of the “old right” claimed by the libertarians and paleos (something that at the ripe old age of 29 I’m old enough to remember still mattering) were in fact in the orbit of the Socialist Party as it stood against entering the Second World War. Even earlier, through some of my kinkier adolescent associations, I even came to recognize the common roots of American Socialism and so-called right-wing populism in, well, Populism. All this came rushing back when I was given the opportunity to follow up my first book with a history of the Socialist Party; almost as soon as I began the primary research I had a happy rediscovery and retrieval of the holy sparks I had seen in artifacts of the radical right when I was young and innocent with dreams of a better world. (For how all of the above falls into place in a historically literate framework, by all means, either pre-order or otherwise plan to buy my forthcoming history of the Socialist Party).

Fairly early on in my relationship with TAC and the history and ideas it exposed me to, I was always intrigued by identifying with, or seeing myself as a sort of 21st century reincarnation of, the better half of the haphazard category George Nash identified as “premature Jewish conservatives,” or what my father once pithily named for me “paleoneocons” – sadly I cannot shake that unfortunate label off to this day. (I should acknowledge the appearances in TAC in his final years of the last living link to that milieu, Ralph de Toledano, whose back-of-the-book essay on Jelly Roll Morton sparked my great passion and love for trad jazz).

This instinct was very much confirmed in the research for my history of the Socialist Party. Who was a figure that represented what my own journey through that saga would have been – a right-wing Jewish Socialist who was never really in the tank for the New Deal, was anti-interventionist, and by the 50s was reading American Mercury and a passionate anti-Zionist? The answer, of course, was the quintessential “paleoneocon” Morrie Ryskind, the writer for the Marx Brothers who was the first benefactor of National Review. Who wouldn’t want to find their kindred spirit in the writer of Animal Crackers and A Night at the Opera?

Until recently I even carried around with me a certain conscious deliberate identity of the Jewish Abner Beech, transported from early postwar Brooklyn to the Brooklyn of here and now (I’ll poll the audience as to whether this would make me the anti-hipster or the ultimate hipster; I’ve long been reduced to comforting myself on this score by the fact that I hate IPA). I know perfectly well that this is just another version of the usable past nuttiness of Paul Berman, the last neocon who still calls himself a socialist, but I at least know that. Interestingly, what’s largely dissipated this elaborate construct for me is having put to paper copious notes for a novel, about the point of collision between the subjects of my two books, in best Bill Kauffman fashion set on the spot of ground on which I live, Prospect Park South (the storyline is a mashup of Copperhead and Fiddler on the Roof).

Anyhow, suffice it to say that my personal journey from a hearty intellectual education from TAC to writing two books of historical non-fiction – and especially the latter of the two – did not prepare me for the shock of one day suddenly realizing that Lena Dunham and Ta-Nehisi Coates are the alleged voices of my generation and leading voices of what now calls itself American liberalism. Indeed, for quite a while I feared that I was fated to be intellectually frozen in amber in the period of the Iraq War, when I knew who my enemies were in the neocons and it could seem that more united than divided their opponents on both the left and right. But seeing the nightmare that digital age liberalism has become, and the hope of its nominal historic values yet finding a new and better home, has renewed my fighting spirit that I hope to once again give voice here at Mitrailleuse.

I remain an optimist seeing the many flowers that are blooming from the seeds planted by TAC – from The Week, The National Interest, and Daily Caller to Front Porch Republic and The Mitrailleuse. I am more convinced than ever that what Partisan Review was to the 1930s, and Commentary and The New Republic arguably were to the 70s and 80s respectively, The American Conservative shall prove to have been to the post-Cold War era.

My Christian friends, in bonds of love,
Whose hearts in sweetest union join,
Your friendship’s like a drawing band,
Yet we must take the parting hand.
Your company’s sweet, your union dear,
Your words delightful to my ear;
Yet when I see that we must part
You draw like cords around my heart.

How sweet the hours have passed away
Since we have met to sing and pray;
How loath we are to leave the place
Where Jesus shows His smiling face.
Oh could I stay with friends so kind,
How would it cheer my drooping mind!
But duty makes me understand
That we must take the parting hand.

And since it is God’s holy will,
We must be parted for a while,
In sweet submission, all as one,
We’ll say, our Father’s will be done.
My youthful friends, in Christian ties,
Who seek for mansions in the skies,
Fight on, we’ll gain that happy shore,
Where parting will be known no more.

How oft I’ve seen your flowing tears,
And heard you tell your hopes and fears!
Your hearts with love were seen to flame,
Which makes me hope we’ll meet again.
Ye mourning souls, lift up your eyes
To glorious mansions in the skies;
Oh trust His grace — in Canaan’s land
We’ll no more take the parting hand.

And now, my friends, both old and young,
I hope in Christ you’ll still go on;
And if on earth we meet no more,
Oh may we meet on Canaan’s shore.
I hope you’ll all remember me
If on earth no more I see;
An int’rest in your prayers I crave,
That we meet beyond the grave.

Oh glorious day! Oh blessed hope!
My soul leaps forward at the thought
When, on that happy, happy land,
We’ll no more take the parting hand.
But with our blessed holy Lord
We’ll shout and sing with one accord,
And there we’ll all with Jesus dwell,
So, loving Christians, fare you well.

But keep in mind two things. Firstly, look at the rural/urban divide which is an even more relevant barometer of class in India than it is in the United States. Secondly, compare these numbers to voting numbers from the 2009 election and prior elections. The general trend of rich people voting BJP and poor people voting Congress has persisted until the present, but the difference is much more shallow than it used to be. Secondly, compare these numbers to the numbers in prior elections. I realize this is an imperfect comparison as we are going between different polls, and comparing favorability ratings to vote counts, but data seems to be scarce on this subject (send me your data and I’ll correct this if its wrong). I’m ok with doing this because the difference is so huge that I can’t imagine another data set showing a contradictory result. The source is “India’s 2009 Elections: The Resilience of Regionalism and Ethnicity” by Christophe Jaffrelot and Gilles Verniers:

<img data-attachment-id="4030" data-permalink="https://mitrailleuse.net/?p=4030" data-orig-file="" data-orig-size="" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="[]" data-image-title="When the ivory tower replaces the throne of God" data-image-description="
It’s hard to get through the day without a good bout of consciousness-raising or thirty. You’d have to be an anarcho-primitivist hermit to miss any newspaper, television news program or social network mention Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, or Eric Garner. We’ve heard their names and know their stories. These men of color have changed the way some see police, their own neighbors, and the criminal justice system as a whole. Protests continue to be held around the country; sometimes violent, but generally peaceful. Now, well-meaning whites have armed themselves not with guns, but with hashtags, flooding the #CrimingWhileWhite Twitter feed with righteous confessionals intended to illustrate the disparity between the way whites and blacks are treated by police.

Will these protests, rallies, boycotts or Twitter confessions effect real change at every level of our criminal justice system to the satisfaction of activists? I don’t think anyone can claim to know for sure.

But one thing is certain: Nothing is perfect. These well-crafted and well-intentioned tweets are being hailed as privilege-checking by some and denounced as flaunting white privilege by others. (What a legitimate role for white bodies in civil rights activism, if it exists, would look like is beyond the scope of this essay.) Still, some popular symbols of solidarity expressed range from donning a hoodie and skittles in honor of Trayvon Martin to the (apocryphal) “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot” stance in honor of Michael Brown.

Others have taken this opportunity to reflect on other areas of life supposedly affected by current social unrest. The most interesting, to me, is religion. Not surprisingly, Christianity is a major target. Secular piety compels me to throw in a line here like “and I don’t blame them for blaming Christianity one bit, it’s totally reasonable to doubt your faith in light of things like this.” But I will not, because it simply is not true. This is not insensitive or closed-minded, as many would like you to believe.

Fellow Christians, do not allow others to convince you that you should reject your beliefs because they may differ from the worldview of those calling your beliefs into question. We could just as well respond that it is time for those people to reconsider their conception of our beliefs. These agitators’ prejudices are likewise in need of reflection.

Barbra Sostaita, a Masters Student at Yale Divinity School and Southeast Regional Director for Students For Liberty, offers this lamentation on the failure of a grand jury to indict Officer Darren Wilson for shooting and killing Michael Brown in self-defense: “As I look around me, I directed my grief to the paintings and statues of Jesus displayed prominently in the room. Where is your justice, My God? You call yourself the Prince of Peace but the blood of my brother cries out to me from the ground and you are astoundingly silent.”

What I find so bothersome about this is not the outright sacrilege of one of the 7 sentences uttered by our Savior in his final hour on earth, it is rather that Barbara has equated her own conception of justice with that of the will of God.

Surely in error (and drowning in an ironic lack of self-awareness), Barbara thought that because she felt that a man was guilty, the cosmic forces of justice must immediately treat him so to her (material) liking. However, her cry for help rests on shaky assumptions. Here, Barbara has decided that the courts of this nation rule in accordance with the will of God.

But we, as Christians, know better. We know that the laws under which we function are not the laws given to us by God. They are the laws of man. Created by him and for him. In looking at the verdict as a failure of God to deliver justice to Michael Brown’s family, Barbara put God, Creator of heaven and earth, all things seen and unseen, on trial and asked Him to answer to her will.

Beyond the theology of the matter, there is the blatant reality of secular dominance. Surely Barbara does not believe that more among our cohort received their moral leadership from dwindling church congregations than MTV or Jon Stewart. Indeed, this decidedly materialist rant against her own mass consumed iconography is just another manifestation of the trending for-profit morality. To rail against an imaginary dystopia drowning in holy water and dominated by Jerry Falwell as if we inhabited anything close to this world is transparent, silly, boring, and dishonest.

I’ve learned to expect this kind of race oriented self-righteous high-horse heresy coming from progressives. But, libertarians? The party of live-and-let-live? And an SFL-er to boot! Say it ain’t so. I’ve always thought of libertarians as those people who don’t want the government to butt into your personal life. “To each his own” they say. But, it’s starting to feel like they’re taking a page out of the “statist” playbook they hate so much and finding ways to butt in themselves. Telling others what they should think and how they should feel about race and religion — two fairly personal issues — is far from what I ever envisioned coming from any person who describes themselves as a libertarian.

In his letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul writes:

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

Last time I checked it is not about the color of your skin when God judges you. Unfortunately for people like Barbara and Dr. Butler, the focus is strictly on the flesh. Not just on the color of it either, but, also on the actions of others who have inherited a sinful (but thankfully temporary) body just as they have. Instead of denying this flesh the value our largely secular society places on it, Barbara and Dr. Butler have embraced it and the brokenness that comes along with it. In focusing on skin color and denying their faith these prophetesses of progressivism perpetuate the idea that physical characteristics matter in this life — securing a place for their view within the current narrative — and mistakenly, beyond.

Proselytizing from on-high with melanin on the mind, race obsessed progressives fail to notice that Christ never assigned a likelihood of salvation to the color of a persons skin. That might be an easy thing to overlook when they’ve preoccupied themselves with making sure everyone else knows that there are certain biological differences among people which do matter and that there are those that don’t. Race is no exception, progressives spend a lot of time telling other people how to feel about race. But, trade-offs are a real thing. The time these progressives spend ranting about race is time they aren’t spending (trying) to understand the faith they blindly dismiss. And that is truly, a shame.

Ignoring the sacrifice of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ in favor of the inherently incomplete form of justice offered on earth is disconcerting to say the least. The very idea that people are willing to abandon their faith because (their conception of) it doesn’t dovetail with their political views is troubling. I can’t help but wonder in light of the reality of this imperial secularism: Why don’t ostensibly Christian people people look up instead of around when they believe the world is in turmoil? It is a sad sight that politics has led people of God to abandon Him because they’ve chosen to believe that it is their own will that should be done when they don’t understand His.

This impulse to look around (or in this case, in one’s living room) instead of up is exemplified in the next paragraph of Barbara’s piece:

As I looked harder, it hit me. All of these images of Christ were of a white man. A blue-eyed, blonde haired man whose sacred heart beat for a chosen group of people. If Jesus is white, then whiteness is hailed as divine and all-powerful. White is associated with God and blackness becomes darkness, evil, distinct from the goodness of God. The more I thought about it, the clearer it became. We live in a society where Black bodies are not seen as holy or worthy of protection.

Is Christ’s physical image all Christians should derive from Him? Is Christ’s physical image the barometer for salvation? I sure hope not. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what it sounds like here. (Perhaps it is a linguistic issue since we speak in English and not Greek though I saw no disclaimer).

This is an attempt to describe our Savior, who is of one nature that is human and divine, strictly by His humanity — as represented in the posters that you chose to purchase and place on your bedroom wall. (Depictions of black Jesus are widely available for purchase.) The early church has already discussed this false materializing prioritization and deemed such a description heresy.

Do you even hypostatic union?

Not to mention, it completely ignores everything Christ did for us. While this isn’t the first time people have questioned Christ for his appearance (hey, the Pharisees were some real haters) one certainly shouldn’t take that as license to view Christ with the same skepticism as those who lobbied Pilate to crucify Him.

While I’m at it, I suppose I should also point out that mankind is not holy. Mankind is broken, weak, fallible and full of sin. The only Being capable of determining holiness is the only Holy One Himself. I believe this point requires further elaboration. It is this sort of hubris that allows man to not only to question God’s authority, but in doing so, to find herself disappointed when this world falls short of her own expectations. It is this sort of hubris that allows one to approach the world around them as if they have complete information. That’s just not true. There is no single human on earth who knows all things.

This propensity to cast judgement on the world as if we are the final arbiters of good and evil, with the the grave deficit of knowledge inherent in mankind, belittles God, His authority and leaves us all subject to the whim of man. This completely ignores what Christ did for us and leaves us seeking the favor of man rather than a salvation and restoration with our heavenly Father.

I was also surprised to find out that whites don’t worship Who they think they do. According to Professor Anthea Butler, whites in this country — Christian or not — believe that white supremacy is their god. Again, someone has taken this time as an opportunity to project their displeasure in their own perception of the God of Christianity onto everyone else.

Not only does this way of thinking allow blacks to only view themselves as a people subject to the will of a god who has forsaken them, rather than true heirs to a heavenly inheritance. It also leaves them in bondage to the things of this world; whether it’s the will of whites, interpretations of their faith by those who see their beliefs as oppressive, or pressure to appease sinful humans who roam this earth right alongside them in search of earthly justice while leaving heavenly justice by the wayside.

Dr. Butler continues: “While I still believe that the nation is obsessed with a punitive Christianity, I would add that white supremacy linked to an American theology of atonement means that brown and black bodies will always be sacrificed, whiteness is the standard, and that the thirst for power and blood is never slaked, never ending. White supremacy always demands the shedding of blood to assert its divinity.”

This sort of view implies that Christ, the only Begotten Son of God, was not a sufficient sacrifice for our sins. What then, does this mean for black Christians? This view leaves them abandoned and worshiping a false god. It also implies that whites — other humans (no matter how you see them) — are responsible for your salvation.

Community with our fellow man is not inherently evil. After all, how can I ever expect God to forgive me my trespasses if I do not first forgive those who trespass against me? Here however, Dr. Butler’s view puts other humans in the judgement seat. And as Christians, regardless of skin color, we know that no human is divine and no human is fit to sit on the throne of God.

Bell hooks (cited by Barbara) and Alice Walker, mentioned in both of the articles excerpted above, are not authoritative figures on Christian theology or Christian social teaching. Bell hooks — an author, feminist and social activist hailed for her views on the oppressive capitalist system (by which her ideas earn her a living) — is cited for her undoubtedly optimistic perspective on race relations in the U.S. both past and present. Homage is also paid to Alice Walker — a writer, poet, and activist — for her book The Color Purple, as Barbara and Dr. Butler provide edgy metaphors and nuanced interpretations of Celie’s trailblazing “spiritual but not religious” outlook, in an attempt to justify a perceived prevalence of racism in a faith abandoned by the main character. But with foolish haste, it is to the ones who look back at them in the mirror whom my fellow fallen daughters of Eve have consulted on the doctrine they are so quick to criticize.

I urge my fellow Christians to stand firm against those who, especially in times of crisis, tell us what we should believe or inform us of “new” theological concerns held by elites about our faith. It is not the ivory tower to which we answer for our salvation. And it is not those who sit on the self-appointed thrones in their new-found cathedrals who will sit on the seat of judgement at the end of days. Remember: We all will be brought before God on judgement day and in that time we must answer to His concerns about our faith.

Rod Dreher put it beautifully in his piece on 12-year-old Devonte Hart, a teary-eyed protester whose tender embrace of Portland Police Sgt. Bret Barnum was immortalized in an AP photograph: “Now, I have no idea if either Devonte Hart or Sgt. Bret Barnum is a Christian. But I do know that millions of us Americans, black and white, are Christians, and because of that, and despite of our many sins and failings, ought to be finding ways to live up to the love shining through that iconic image above…”

Rod is trying to communicate the true Christian vision, Barbie and Anthea, the perversions. Trying times are when it’s most important to live your faith–and the easiest to castigate others for doing so while posturing yourself as the *true* arbiter of holiness. In styling themselves as above other Christians (a god-like arbiter of true holiness) does injustice to Christianity *and* to the “victims” they exploit to posit their own godliness. May God have mercy on us all.

“But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” – Matthew 24:36

You’d have to be an anarcho-primitivist hermit to miss any newspaper, television news program or social network mention of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, or Eric Garner.

Barbra Sostaita, a Masters Student at Yale Divinity School, Young Voices Advocate and Former Students For Liberty Campus Coordinator offers this lamentation on the failure of a grand jury to indict Officer Darren Wilson for shooting and killing Michael Brown in self-defense: “As I look around me, I directed my grief to the paintings and statues of Jesus displayed prominently in the room.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the focus for people like Barbara. Not just on the color of it either, but, also on the actions of others who have inherited a sinful (but thankfully temporary) body just as they have. Instead of denying this flesh the value our largely secular society places on it, Barbara has embraced it and the brokenness that comes along with it. In focusing on skin color and denying their faith prophetesses of progressivism, such as Barbara, perpetuate the idea that physical characteristics matter in this life — securing a place for their view within the current narrative — and mistakenly, beyond.

As I’m sitting in an office on K Street, emptied for Christmas, wondering how to introduce myself to you all, it occurs to me that I owe you an explanation. It sounds like a bad joke, that a editor at a DC political website would want anything to do with a website dedicated to place and peace.

There was a big story out last week, by James Carden and Jacob Heilbrunn about my city paper, and how its editorial page is America’s biggest “megaphone for unrepentant warrior intellectuals.” That’s got something to do with it.

Modi also seems to have overperformed amongst Muslims, which somewhat conflicts with the narrative I’m building in the sense that Modi is not as divisively communalist as Trump. But there are bound to be minor differences between India and the U.S. in respect to class composition and loyalty. In any case seems obvious then that Modi overperformed amongst the lower classes. Trump pulled off something similar with middle-lower class whites.

Shifting Class Coalitions–Trump: An objection might be that the Trump voters’ median income is higher than the median income of Clinton supporters. Fivethirtyeight.com reports:

The median household income of a Trump voter so far in the primaries is about $72,000, based on estimates derived from exit polls and Census Bureau data. That’s lower than the $91,000 median for Kasich voters. But it’s well above the national median household income of about $56,000. It’s also higher than the median income for Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders supporters, which is around $61,000 for both.

I’m a little skeptical of this poll because it took place during the summer and comes from Nate Silver, but lets accept it along with the rest of Nate’s work for good measure.

The response to this objection is as follows: Firstly, although the income of his voters was still higher as a median measurement than Clinton’s, the broader shift he is a part of is towards a reversal or evening out of high/low income party affiliations.

Furthermore, Mencius Moldbug laid out a class/caste system for the United States which doesn’t just rely on income but also on race and most importantly education. This is perhaps as key as the rural/urban class divide is in India, which reflects where most capital is held in each economy. If you haven’t read Moldbug on class and caste before, you should do so immediately. He is one of the few western thinkers to appreciate the validity and utility of caste as a way of understanding culture and politics. For his work in this area he deserves to be an honorary Aryan. His Brahmin-Dalit-Helot VS. Optimate-Vaishya schematic for class conflicts is one of the easiest ways to understand American politics in general, and the Trump election in particular. Be careful though, these caste labels have a different meaning than they do in the Indian context.

An educated person (a Brahmin) with a somewhat low income (for example, a professor or fine artist) and an uneducated person (a Vaishya) with a higher income (for example a successful but uneducated small business owner) are in very different classes. They have different friends, different levels of cultural influence, different hobbies and passions, and most importantly have different collective interests and degrees of class privilege. Trump won the uneducated white vote in spades. (“I love the poorly educated!“). He leaned hard on the Vaishyas, and it basically worked.

It called the defeat of Gamergate inevitable because of the forces of cultural inertia stacked against it. The actual outcome was in some ways predictable, but otherwise quite surprising.

Gamergate didn’t win – but it didn’t lose

I attributed Gamergate losing to a phenomenon that in fact did come to pass. The groovy media intelligentsia did everything in its power to paint Gamergate as a simultaneously laughable yet dangerous hate movement that exposed male geeks as crypto-Nazis. To any normally socialized and status-conscious type of person, the media gambit would have led to the spiral of silence that I foresaw. The important factor here is that geeks, by definition, are not normally socialized and status-conscious people. This is particularly true when speaking ex cathedra from their identity as geeks. The threat of looking cool doesn’t work because they are already uncool. They are already pariahs with ‘lame’ hobbies. Media elites and uncool nerds are two fundamentally different types of people.

Every single dominant cultural institution was stacked against Gamergate. Nobody had the intellectual bravery to side with a movement that was apparently just. Gamergate was rapidly becoming a dirty word in the mouths of anyone concerned with looking sensitive and. Thousands upon thousands were tripping over each other to signal their politically correct status, and “misogynerds” were in the crosshairs.

And to their credit, the geeks came out pretty unscathed. Only through their tenacity and lack of concern with their image did Gamergate not get nuked from the chic heights of media that stooped to notice it. The desperately fashionable media displayed its contempt for nerds for “not being with the program.” The problem is that they only had a little less contempt before this fiasco. This is just another example of the people in media, entertainment and academia having a values dissonance with pretty much everyone else.

Gamergate slavishly played the left’s identity game

The figures elevated to the top of the Gamergate movement had one of two qualities – their identities as white males were concealed or played down, or they were not white males and such identities were played up. This isn’t as much ignoble as it is just a Darwinian survival response to an environment (the media, old or new) that operates on top of hard-left ideological assumptions about truth itself. To the ideologue, truth has nothing to do with any facts concerning objective reality it has everything to do with the realities of the

Look at Alejandro Arganonda’s “People of Gamergate” gallery. The red portraits are anti-GG folks and blue portraits are pro-GG. Notice how the vast majority of the anti-Gamergate “bad guys” are shown to be white males, whereas the pro side has only a handful. The bulk of the Gamergate personalities with a significant bully pulpit are not white and/or not male. Those with pictures that aren’t of their faces can only be assumed to be white males. If they were female or non-whites, why wouldn’t the leverage that to score some points game that everyone is playing?

Instead of saying “fuck you, identities don’t matter, only arguments do” or even “It’s OK to be a white male,” Gamergate played ball. Proof of the movement’s righteousness and honesty did not come from the facts or arguments, but from the volume of pro-GG commentary coming from non-whites and non-males.

It can’t be stressed enough that this isn’t an unscrupulous strategy. I am talking about it because it’s a great barometer for the cultural climate of the world that we inhabit. Gamergate wanted to see journalists actually have, you know, ethical standards. Gamergate wanted to stop Marxist fanatics from imposing politics on the hitherto apolitical. To stay alive in the war for public opinion and actually achieve these goals, this had to happen.

Gamergate learned from its opposition and used their tactics

There were clearly fake public threats against pro-Gamergaters. These directly mirrored the original bogus threats made against anti-Gamergate personalities.

As underhanded as it seems, this tactic was probably necessary. It’s a powerful co-opting because basically three things can result from it:

The threats are given roughly the same weight as the threats to the anti-GG camp are given

The threats are treated as farcical, thus recognizing threats in general and on the other side as possibly (probably) fake

The threats are ignored, and then unfair contrast of media coverage can be pointed out.

What happened was a whole lot of number three. The media had already shot its wad with politicizing Gamergate, and even if there was a desire for fair coverage of threats, the news hook was stale. This is a valuable lesson to anyone who is a victim of shitty false-flag sympathy tactics: do the same thing. It’s an arms race of dishonesty, but I just don’t see any way around it. The arms race needs to continue until it collapses under the weight of its on farce, and dishonest or otherwise sympathy garnering ad hominems of threats are no longer part of the discourse.

Conclusion

The roaring flames of #Gamergate have since become guttering embers, but it’s not an isolated incident. It is merely a battle in the war between those who want to limit the scope of ideology in the world and fanatics who believe that their dogma needs to be implemented everywhere. So even if you’re a third party who doesn’t care about video games, you should give the next Gamergate like it your moral support, whatever it may be. The aspects of our society that haven’t yet been politicized are a precious few.

Hindus for Trump: Do I even need to point out the popularity of Trump amongst Hindu Nationalists, and the role of NRIs within the Trump campaign, and the Modi campaign? Actually I probably do. NRIs played a major role in the Modi campaign. They donated massively, and held a huge public event for him in Madison Square Garden.

*****

On a personal note, yesterday I was received into the Catholic Church at St. Luke’s at Immaculate Conception, an Ordinariate parish in Shaw, not far from where I live. I went into some of the reasons why I became a lapsed Anglican in this post, largely out of suspicion of the neoconservative sympathies of many leaders of the Anglican realignment in the DC area. I still think they were and are right to flee the Episcopal Church and its tyrannical leadership. Episcopalianism is historically a religion of American elites, and as the elite consensus has shifted further to the left, it faced a choice between Christian orthodoxy and its historic class affinities. The Episcopal Church made the wrong one. TEC is resolutely pro-abortion and its health ministry is helping to implement Obamacare; Gene Robinson and the NEHM’s director are fellows at the Center for American Progress.

However, it is not at all clear to me that people like Fred Barnes, Michael Gerson, Howard Ahmanson Jr., and other politically connected movers in the Anglican realignment have any particular concern for what we in the Ordinariate call “Anglican patrimony.” In fact, they seem to see the matter as just another front in the culture wars. Those first two, among others, were chief propagandists for the disastrous second Iraq invasion, which has reduced the Christian population of Iraq by around a million. Most disturbingly, there is evidence that Barnes, Ken Starr, Mort Kondracke, and the rector of my family’s parish put themselves under the instruction of Jerry Leachman, who is, to put it mildly, certainly not an Anglican. It seemed to me that leaving the Democratic Party at prayer, only to become the Republican Party at prayer, was not going very far at all. I had always been against abortion and preemptive war, for the same reason.

Hindsight is 20/20 and all, and many have admitted after the fact that the Iraq invasion was a catastrophe. But if this doesn’t speak to a crisis of authority, I’m not sure what would. When reporting the above for a piece I ended up withdrawing for personal reasons, I couldn’t help but compare Rev. Yates’ response to me on the Iraq war — that it had gone badly, but that weighing in on matters political was unwise in such an influential congregation — to Michael Novak’s fruitless petition to the Vatican in 2003. The Holy Father, at least, was able to speak the truth about injustice without worrying about offending powerful congregants in the media or civil service.

Not long after I put up that post, news broke that there will probably never be another Lambeth Conference, due mostly to TEC’s desire to hew more closely to the Democratic Party than the rest of the Anglican Communion. Around the same time a friend informed me that St. Luke’s, once an Episcopalian congregation that converted, was moving from Bladensburg to downtown, on my way to work. Given the above, I took this to mean that the Catholic Church wasn’t going to leave me behind, and knew it would be wrong not to honor that. At that point it was a matter of putting my money where my mouth was.

I received the Eucharist for the first time yesterday, and to put all this behind me is truly a gift from God. I encourage anyone else who’s been disturbed by any of the above to do the same. There is peace and security in the Universal Church.

(The picture above is of St. Alban Roe, whose name I took during confirmation, a martyr of the English counter-reformation. He is occasionally pictured with a playing card, in reference to him gambling while in prison, except betting small prayers instead of money.)

But what is so unique about the situation is that for the first time Hindu Nationalists, (or borderline Nationalists) actually went full throttle for an American candidate. Hindus for Trump was an active online community over the course of the election, not just on Facebook but everywhere Trump was being discussed. Ivanka celebrated Divali at a mandir in Virginia. Eric Trump visited a mandir in Orlando and performed aarati in advance of the election. Then there was the Bollywood themed Trump event held in New Jersey, the proceeds of which went “toward the Hindu victims of Islamic terror in Kashmir and Bangladesh.” And don’t forget the “Ab Ki Bar Trump Sarkar” ad which came out of that event. This is all pretty unprecedented, and liberals whites and Hindus alike seem to be largely ignoring it out of embarrassment.

What is the reason for this attraction? Well this is sort of crude and perhaps cynical, but one reason is purely aesthetic. Trump has the aesthetic of a charismatic strongman, and he is without a doubt “high energy.” He is an inspiring guy, and though leftists and establishment conservatives criticize his tactics as “third world,” they do seem to work particularly well on people actually from the third world who haven’t bought into identity politics, or who haven’t yet linked their particular brand of identity politics with the Democratic party (not just Hindus by the way. I’ve also met a fair number of Muslims, or third world Christians who supported him for seemingly no reason other than the aesthetic presence he has). To get a sense of this type of support, watch this song and video “Trump Ka Mania” by Baba Sehgal, a Punjabi rapper. He isn’t even a Trump supporter as far as I know, he just likes the high energy of the campaign and Trump’s big personality. The very things which make white and Hindu liberal cosmopolitans cringe.

Some of this support is due to the obvious overlap between Modi and Trump’s policies, especially as regards radical Islam. Remember the Hindu Sena events which took place in New Delhi to celebrate Trump’s birthday, pray for his campaign, and celebrate his victory? That was just a more public and low-culture display of the way conservative NRIs feel about Trump, and it was pretty obviously centered around a shared animosity towards radical Islam. The Islam question, the aesthetics, and Trump’s promise to bring India and the U.S. closer are probably the biggest factors behind Hindu support for Trump in my estimation.

I’m not sure what proportion of Hindus supported Trump. It is most likely quite low. Polls conducted in June-August put support for Trump amongst “Asian Indians” at around 7%. However, that poll doesn’t disaggregate Hindus, was a bit far from the election, and also included Sanders (who got 23% of the support, to Clinton’s 60) so I would expect Trump’s actual support amongst Hindus to be a bit higher than 7% in actuality.

<img data-attachment-id="4154" data-permalink="https://mitrailleuse.net/?p=4154" data-orig-file="" data-orig-size="" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="[]" data-image-title="How sad it must be to be angry all the time" data-image-description="
Well I didn’t call it.

The perpetually indignated lefties at Slate have declared 2014 “The Year of Outrage.” They aren’t wrong; and it’s more than a bit ironic the writers making the claim are also responsible for the madness that now defines the internet news cycle. A handful of the site’s reporters weighed in on the outrage phenomenon, some admirably taking responsibility for it. Jordan Weissmann, to his credit, lamented the “impulse to jump on the outrage cycle” and drive traffic to small pieces of life’s innumerable injustices. He defends the practice however, saying “viral hits help finance other less outraged, more important journalism.” Yes and drug-dealing can also be used to fund soup kitchen operations. The latter doesn’t make the former any less immoral.

Betsy Woodruff does a decent job highlighting the more embarrassing attempts to use outrage machinations by conservatives. But even while well-meaning voices on the right are apt to use harsh-worded demonization, the kind of determined vitriol progressives embrace is another matter altogether. For the left, outrage is a lifestyle instead of a seldom-felt emotion.

The standard liberal activist isn’t fighting for a world of their ideals they can enjoy. More and more, it seems like they are fighting for the sake of fighting, never to be satisfied with the way things are. This, I suspect, is the fuel for the left’s constant, inexhaustible rage fest against all things judged “normal” by contemporary standards. From this dark hole of furry is where we find ourselves heading into a new year of invisible microaggressions, egregious thoughtcrimes, insensitive career-destroying remarks, and metaphysical injustices. Media outlets like Salon, MSNBC, and especially Slate won’t take a break in reminding the country that a battle of furious emotion must be fought every single day.

Where exactly does this gloomy disposition originate from? In the aforementioned “Year of Outrage” piece, Jamelle Bouie (no stranger to manufactured ire himself) admits that it “feels good to express disgust.” “In a world where prejudice and privilege still rule the day,” Bouie attests, “it’s cathartic for a lot of lefties—even straight white dudes—to show outrage, even if it leads to nothing in particular.” Excuse me? I don’t speak for all straight white dudes, but it seems damn stupid to fume without cause. Yet the practice is somehow salutary for liberals. This insight is revealing of the sad disposition held by many progressives.

I’m no psychologist but I’d conjecture the left’s embrace of hathos is linked to an inability to feel at home in reality. Perceived injustices are much easier to handle when one is comfortable in their own environment. If you feel rooted to your hometown, and a neighbor holds a belief you find execrable, it’s much easier to forgive and move on to retain a sense of stability. I imagine this is hard for leftists who feel the implacable need to reform the world in their own egalitarian image.

The lack of belonging is similar to Eugene O’Neill’s character Yank in The Hairy Ape. Formerly content with his coal-shoveling job on an oceanliner, Yank becomes obsessed with one-upping a female socialite who found him brutish and unrefined. After being turned away by both the 5th Avenue crowd and radical unionists, Yank tries to find solace in the company of an ape at the city zoo. The animal, which lacks the ability to empathize with man’s struggle for meaning and place, crushes Yank to death after being let out of confinement. Before succumbing to the enormous strength of the simian, the inarticulate anti-hero tells the creature, “I ain’t on oith and I ain’t in heaven, get me? I’m in de middle tryin’ to separate ‘em, takin’ all de woist punches from bot’ of ‘em.” That kind of listlessness defines the never-ending campaign of fervor the left can’t stop waging.

Progressives, by definition, are neither comfortable with common life or in their imagined future of perfect resource and talent distribution. If all their wishes are granted and the oppressive white patriarchy is smashed to pieces, diatribes about offensive stares on public transportation will still be written. Mind-boggling gender categories will still be invented. Endless discussions about whether a child’s hat should be considered “boy” or “girl” clothing will still ensue. The complaints, trivial as they are, are a recipe for an unhappy life as they form into a blanket of sheer discontent.

Adam Gurri calls this histrionic approach to life looking into the “telescopic morality machine.” Not only is this worldview morally depleting, it draws attention away from the things that can be remedied for the better. Gurri writes that progressives who fret over every little insult end up with a “life spent desperately grasping at fractured and filtered pieces of other people’s stories, a life hardly lived.” To “rage at things you cannot control” he argues, comes “at the expense of time you could be investing improving the state of affairs around you.”

How depressing it must be to be on guard for any slight, no matter how insignificant, just to have fodder for denouncing society over social media. It’s no wonder America is following Europe’s path and losing the moral calculus that comes with a lived religion. What’s the point of prayer and reading Scripture if your gospel is made up of Huffington Post headlines? If all 365 days of the year contain something worthy of complaint – as Slate documents for 2014 – surely the world is not filled with a Creator’s love. The only other explanation is an amoral existence lacking in reason or purpose. This explains why progressives find the need to latch on to grievances, no matter how small or inconsequential. Finding goodness in anger provides an identity to those who preach the message.

The left’s unending dissatisfaction also make sense considering the electoral strategy of America’s home for progressives: the Democratic Party. Democrats, like other parties, use tribalism to win elections. They foster group identity while promoting hatred for competing groups, more often than not made up of middle class, intact families. Basically, they prey on feelings of isolation. Gays, single women, and poor minorities are all targets of F.D.R.’s party. While this strategy works for short-term solidarity, it’s deleterious in the long-run because it constantly berates members with feelings of ill will towards everyone around them. More importantly, it degrades a sense of shared country and common humanity among its adherents. Here, I believe, is the real toxicity behind the left’s identity politics and subsequent crusades of detestation.

Fitzgerald said children “aren’t nomads” and their “hearts must be somewhere.” He’s neither completely correct or wrong. Humanity’s heart longs for place. Adults are just better at hiding their unfulfilled longings. Adolescents cry out when they feel out of balance or too bothered by life’s unstable turns. Perhaps then immaturity best explains the outrage-fueled engine that keeps the liberal hate machine chugging along.

But like the Jews (who also vote overwhelmingly Democratic), the influence of Hindus is perhaps more accurately measured in dollars. In fact the Republican Hindu Coalition seems to consciously model its efforts on that of those Jewish community. Shalli Kumar apparently personally donated $900,000 to Trump’s campaign. I’m assuming he wasn’t alone on this given how much attention Trump gave to the Hindu community. Regardless of your view of Trump, this is significant as it represents a major step for the Hindu American community. It is now putting its money and organizational power forward to advance its political interests in a very targeted and direct manner.
