But, one Kickstarter project may have taken that concept to an entirely new level. What if, when you were injured and lost blood in a game, you lost blood in real life as well? While the premise may sound completely horrific and downright absurd, a pair of former digital advertising creatives are hoping that their latest project, aptly dubbed Blood Sport, will make donating blood more enjoyable.

The technology behind Blood Sport is relatively simple. Using a modified game controller, an ATmega328 based Arduino and a sharp needle, a player is hooked up to a blood collection system (like the ones typically used during blood drives). A wire is connected from the controller’s “rumble pack” to the blood collection machine via the Arduino. That way, every time a player’s character is injured and loses blood in the game, the connected controller vibrates and the collection system withdraws blood.

Blood Sport works with any gaming console that is equipped with rumbling controllers.

In addition, the ATmega328 board has two jobs: one is to keep the signal going to the blood collection system, while the other is keeping track of how much blood is being extracted. This is configured by players inputting their age, weight and any pre-existing medical conditions prior to engaging in the game.

It’s important to note that the Maker duo — comprised of Taran Chadha and Jamie Umpherson — aspires to take the concept on the road for blood drives, not so much in the dorms or bedrooms of gamers. “Our goal is to develop a refined multiplayer unit that can be taken across the country [Canada] for blood donation gaming events.

“We are not a charity and we are not a game manufacturer. We are simply creating the gaming hardware that will allow us to get gamers thinking about more important issues while still doing what they love.”

At the moment, the team only has one single-player working prototype, but are seeking $250,000 to aid in further development. Interested in learning more or backing Blood Sport? Head on over to its official crowdfunding page here.
