But&#8230; did you know Portugal also has caves? In fact, Portugal has lots of caves, but plenty of them can&#8217;t be visited because they&#8217;re not, well, easy to access.</p>

Today I&#8217;m bringing you some images from Grutas da Moeda (literally, &#8220;caves of the coin&#8221;).</p>
<p><a href="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-2795"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="2795" data-permalink="https://beyondlisbon.wordpress.com/2016/03/03/under-your-feet/gruta-da-moeda_2/" data-orig-file="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg" data-orig-size="2772,2672" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4.5&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon PowerShot SX10 IS&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1444061920&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;5&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;400&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.125&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="gruta da moeda_2" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg?w=1024" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2795" src="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg?w=690&#038;h=665" alt="gruta da moeda_2" width="690" height="665" srcset="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg?w=690&amp;h=665 690w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg?w=1380&amp;h=1330 1380w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg?w=150&amp;h=145 150w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg?w=300&amp;h=289 300w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg?w=768&amp;h=740 768w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_2.jpg?w=1024&amp;h=987 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a>These caves were discovered in 1971, when two hunters were chasing a fox. The fox eventually hid in a hole in the ground, which they found out to be an entrance to a cave. The two men explored that entrance for almost two months, discovering some of the galleries that you can visit today. <a href="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-2799"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="2799" data-permalink="https://beyondlisbon.wordpress.com/2016/03/03/under-your-feet/gruta-da-moeda_6/" data-orig-file="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg" data-orig-size="3648,2736" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4.5&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon PowerShot SX10 IS&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1444064015&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;13.751&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;400&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.04&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="gruta da moeda_6" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg?w=1024" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2799" src="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg?w=690&#038;h=518" alt="gruta da moeda_6" width="690" height="518" srcset="https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg?w=690&amp;h=518 690w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg?w=1380&amp;h=1036 1380w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg?w=150&amp;h=113 150w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg?w=300&amp;h=225 300w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg?w=768&amp;h=576 768w, https://beyondlisbon.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/gruta-da-moeda_6.jpg?w=1024&amp;h=768 1024w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a>The part that you can now visit is about 350 meters long (not very long, but there&#8217;s plenty to see!) and there&#8217;s a constant temperature of 18ºC all year round.</p>

Many, many years ago, a wealthy man was passing by the area and he carried with him a bag heavy with coins. A band of thieves tried to rob the man and, in the struggle, he ended up falling down a hole in the ground (the cave, as you probably guessed), taking with him the bag of coins.</p>
