A contract player for Paramount, he was forced to take the lead role in <cite>The Lost Weekend</cite> because of turning down a role in another film. The one he turned down failed, and his punishment earned him his Oscar. In his career he&#8217;s been the male lead in urbane romantic comedies, a sophisticated villain, and a tyrannical father. He&#8217;s also had to deal with the occasional chimpanzee.</p>
<p>My intent is to honor the memory of this great actor by reviewing everything obtainable.</p>
