As something fades

Within us something says “Wow”

There’s a new thought we’ve found

What if tears were white

And clouds were blue

And blood was red – yours is, mine too

What kind of poem can a patriot write

If a man was so hopelessly inclined

To believe in something unbelievable

Inconceivable, like a movie with an open-end

It may never end, this storm of hate

Perhaps that is this country’s fate

But what if it’s not

What if the truth is far too hot

It burns our ears and eyes and minds

Like the voice of a country who is so inclined

To believe in love and believe in words

In a language of reason which trudges forward

In a leader who knows he’s not eaten the tree

Of the knowledge of goodness of you and me

Who knows what an election night poem looks like

Probably too long to read and too hard to write

But most of all it’s difficult to judge

How can I feel about this? What does he think?

When you look at these words what do you see?

I see a country of faith in something undone

Like an ugly Christmas sweater whose pain goes unsung

I see a cascade of metaphors, most of them meaningless

But as I turn to you and I say “Are you seeing this?”

You will say yes because that’s the truth

But who’s gonna read this thing anyway?

Why post it?

I don’t know and how can I?

All I know is all you need is love
