The Fine Arts department received a donation in July by the daughter of George Troy Hurlburt. The donation was a variety of art books, countless tubes of water color, acrylic and oil paints, sketchbooks, canvases and additional art supplies.

Hurlburt, a Butler alumnus, graduated in 1956, and later received his bachelor’s at Emporia State in business management.

Hurlburt met his wife, Rita DeWitt, in algebra class at Butler. They married in 1956 and enjoyed 62 years of marriage. Hurlburt had a great life ranging from art, drag racing, car salesman, woodworking and golf.

The art department and students will benefit from the donations. The items donated are useful and meaningful for students and faculty.

Valerie Haring, lead instructor of the art department, is touched by the donation from the Hurlburt family.

“It’s hard for our students to pay for tuition and books and hundreds of dollars of art supplies on top of that,” Haring said.

The donation allows students to benefit by allowing them to use the art supplies donated rather than spending money to buy supplies.

Memorial contributions can be donated in George’s name at Butler Community College and the El Dorado Senior Center.
