Even if he had been armed, giving up the car was the right thing to do. That&#8217;s not the point.</p>
<p>The following paragraph used to appear at the end of the sfgate story, and has vanished:</p>
<blockquote><p>Perata said he never had the permit renewed when it expired two years ago because he &#8220;just never had the opportunity to re-qualify&#8221; at a gun  range. Perata obtained the permit out of security concerns stemming from his work regulating firearms.</p></blockquote>
<p>Let me translate: &#8220;Regulate&#8221; means &#8220;make unavailable to honest citizens&#8221;. When he worked hard to disarm Californians, a few complained in, perhaps, inappropriate ways.  He claimed there were &#8220;death threats&#8221;. For the record, I think he was lying.</p>
<p>His response was to arm himself.</p>
<p>What a hypocrite and a coward.</p>
