<p>Here&#8217;s a fascinating bit of history. As you should know, World War I wasn&#8217;t known by that name until WWII. In its day it was &#8220;The War to End All Wars&#8221;. So, since war was about to vanish from the earth, an <a href="http://www.artsjournal.com/aboutlastnight/2008/11/tt_the_eleventh_day_of_the_ele.html" target="_blank">intrepid engineer</a> recorded the <a href="http://www.firstworldwar.com/audio/British%20Troops%20-%20Gas%20Shells%20Bombardment.mp3" target="_blank">sounds of battle</a> for posterity.</p>
<p>And can you believe it? Suddenly even Google remembers the holiday.</p>
