The entire picture plane is activated through the use of biomorphic shapes, simultaneous contrast, and through the use of specifically chosen colors. The repetition of the color red is used as an element to create visual flow. There is also a subtle directional conflict that exists, but is does not create too much tension. The biomorphic shapes used are both flowing convex and concave shapes that brings the eye in and out of each piece. Color is utilized to create symmetry through the composition, but there is more weight placed in the center of the image.  There are two straight lines strategically placed in the center to and at the top to provide geometric weight. The red biomorphic shapes starts to lead the eye around the page, but then the bright yellow continues to help bring you around. The yellow and mustard yellow bring you down the paged and then leads to a round biomorphic shape. The lines converge and diverge away from each other taking the eye around the composition. Overall the painting has warm tones of purple, red and yellow.

The concept of this design is to convey my energy. Generally I’m an introvert and most people are not aware that I’m an energetic person that enjoys life. I chose red since it’s a bold, passionate color that is full of energy. I used the complimentary colors of violet and yellow because together they portray the highs and lows of an energy. The light purples are representative of the variety of energy levels that one can have. The strong, deep violets that are placed towards the center of the page offer the metaphorical inevitable crash that occurs when a person is continuously energetic and vibrantly living life.

Looking at my composition I would have liked to include more red towards the upper left part of my painting and perhaps would have placed a small red shape as my focal point. It’s a constant struggle to successfully have a focal point and I wish I had considered it more as I painted my shapes. Additionally, I’m missing more tints of the colors I utilized, red, yellow, and violet. I’m not as content with the lack of light values, but while I was painting it I did not feel it was appropriate to portray energy.

Paintings

I enjoyed using complimentary colors to develop the shapes and composition of my painting,  which was my most succesful. I utilized violet and yellow to create simultaneous contrast which also lent itself to activating different shapes. Using the color theory of complimentary colors was the most interesting in regards to using colors as a way to develop space and figure ground relationships.

The least successful was the analogous painting for which I used the primary color blue. The painting is not successful at creating space and establishing a focal point was not successful.  The successful aspect  of this piece is the value range; there are several tints and shades of blues.

Project # 9 Value Self Portrait Collage

The self-portrait was constructed compiling a collage of painted paper.  The image above uses nine different values from the value scale, which creates depth. Although there are flat panes of value found throughout the image, there are areas on my face that more values added. Right now there are pieces that have created stark contrast rather than having a smooth transition. The lines placed in the background help to create an interesting composition and it also establishes a sense of space.

The entire picture plane is utilized and activated through the use of repetition and geometric shapes. The feeling that I tried to convey was jittery circles with the help of additional elements. I used a stamp, and page protectors to develop figure ground relations while developing a feeling. I waste able to successfully cohesively put the elements together.

The composition utilizes the entire picture plane however it does not appear as a unified piece. I was most succesful at creating textures for the cloth and the rope in comparison to the beaded flower. It was a challenge in describing sequence and beads as a texture through the use line. Looking at the work from afar, I can see that there are some values missing that would help to create an emphasis on certain parts of the composition.

Project 5 –

I was unsuccessful in trying to create a composition that completes by shape and color. The larger figures are more successful in coming forward then the smaller pieces.

Project 4 – Directional Dominance

Conflicting Lines, Directional Forces

The drawing above contains directional conflict that is vertical and horizontal with some diagonal. There is not a full value scale incorporated  in the drawing due to dispersed lines.  In order to fix this work I would add more precise lines that are closer together in order to have more contracting values.

Project 3 –  In Progress

This assignment is going to be redone. The subject is recognizable and does not follow the conventions of using 3 different lines. I’m going to focus on using lines, gradation, and value to design a composition that’s fully activated and visually interesting.

Project 2 – Photography 

The grid above successfully uses repetition however upon further inspection the last grid box should have been the full tree.  The entire space s activated but the visual flow has been segmented into thirds rather creating a unified piece.

Project 1 – Dynamic Compositions

There is a primary focus point that utilizes the rule of thirds. The composition uses the entire plane and has visual flow, however there is a lot of negative space that I’m not sure is successful.
