Embedded means <a title="wiktionary" href="http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/embedded" target="_blank">rooted or planted within</a>, and most of us became familiar with something akin to embedded librarianship when the term &#8220;<a title="embedded journalism" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embedded_journalism" target="_blank">embedded journalism</a>&#8221; appeared during the 2003 invasion of Iran.</p>
<p>The concept of embedded librarianship seems to be more common in academic and special libraries, but I propose it is perhaps most needed in public libraries.  In the current economy, and when it is becoming increasingly popular to cut taxes, libraries all over the country are <a title="Huff post article re budget cuts" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/16/can-the-american-library-_n_1096484.html" target="_blank">finding themselves in danger</a>. Embedded librarianship positions libraries in the center of their communities.  <a href="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/3797812551.jpg"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="709" data-permalink="https://cherylbecker.wordpress.com/2012/07/15/a-new-kind-of-librarian/attachment/3797812551/" data-orig-file="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/3797812551.jpg" data-orig-size="500,409" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="3797812551" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/3797812551.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/3797812551.jpg?w=500" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-709" title="3797812551" src="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/3797812551.jpg?w=300&#038;h=245" alt="meeting" width="300" height="245" srcset="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/3797812551.jpg?w=300&amp;h=245 300w, https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/3797812551.jpg?w=150&amp;h=123 150w, https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/3797812551.jpg 500w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a>A recent Library Journal article <a title="American Libraries article" href="http://www.americanlibrariesmagazine.org/features/06132012/community-reference-making-libraries-indispensable-new-way" target="_blank">Community Reference: Making Libraries  Indispensable in a New Way</a> states: &#8220;Librarians have the power to change lives and build community—but to do this, we have to leave our desks, leave our buildings, and show the community what a powerful tool we are.&#8221;  If you haven&#8217;t thought about or researched embedded librarianship, take a look at the article and challenge yourself to consider implementing this in your library.</p>
