<p>Labor Day weekend, 2012.  Amid <a title="Taste of Madison" href="http://www.tasteofmadison.com/" target="_blank">festivities</a>, <a title="Labor Day Concert D.C. " href="http://dc.about.com/od/concerts/a/LaborDayConcert.htm" target="_blank">celebrations</a>, and <a title="Labor Day quotes" href="http://jwaters.wrytestuff.com/swa539475-Top-20-Labor-Day-Quotes-Famous-Quotes-About-Labor-Day.htm" target="_blank">sentiments</a>, I&#8217;m taking time to reflect on the <a title="Labor Day Wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day" target="_blank">holiday</a>.  All those years that I was working, I confess it was just another day to be glad of the day off with pay.  But this year, especially in light of the <a title="Huff Post article on labor rights" href="http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/labor/217665-the-gops-assault-on-labor-rights" target="_blank">attacks on labor unions and the rights of ordinary workers</a>, I can&#8217;t help but wonder what will happen to Labor Day.  Is Labor Day 2012 the last one we will celebrate?<a href="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/6083696140.jpg"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="964" data-permalink="https://cherylbecker.wordpress.com/2012/09/02/labor-day-musings/attachment/6083696140/" data-orig-file="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/6083696140.jpg" data-orig-size="500,367" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="6083696140" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/6083696140.jpg?w=300" data-large-file="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/6083696140.jpg?w=500" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-964" title="6083696140" src="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/6083696140.jpg?w=300&#038;h=220" alt="Solidarity" width="300" height="220" srcset="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/6083696140.jpg?w=300&amp;h=220 300w, https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/6083696140.jpg?w=150&amp;h=110 150w, https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/6083696140.jpg 500w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
<p>What does this have to do with libraries, you might ask? Well, many public and academic librarians are <a title="American Libraries_Not your Scapegoat" href="http://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/columns/my-mind/i-m-not-your-scapegoat" target="_blank">union members</a>.  Additionally, as government and non-profit workers, they benefit from the <a title="Five Things Labor Unions have done" href="http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/03/05/148930/top-five-things-unions/?mobile=nc" target="_blank">advances</a> labor unions have negotiated for all employees.  And finally, libraries are one of the tax-supported services <a title="Library Budget Cuts across country" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/16/can-the-american-library-_n_1096484.html" target="_blank">threatened by recent tax cuts</a>.</p>
<p>I worry about the future of Labor Day, labor unions, and libraries.</p>
