I Mean. . . No!
<type>link</type>

So, librarianship is made up of lots of women. Don’t get me wrong; there are lots of men too. But the field is predominantly female. Nothing wrong with that. But here’s one thing that’s true of lots of women. We have trouble saying “No.” I’m not sure why. Perhaps we want to be liked and appreciated. Perhaps we have been brought up that way, to say “Yes” to please other people. Perhaps we want to be taken seriously, to prove that we can do anything a man can do, so we say “Yes.” To Everything. The result is: that sometimes you say yes to far, far too many things and cannot deliver on all of them. And you get burned out. This is NOT a Good Thing.

So, we need to learn to say “No.” Not all the time. But some of the time. How to Say No in a Sticky Situation will give you some tips on how to decide whether to say “No,” and how to say it. And here’s a preview:

. . . if you want to be authentic, you’ll need to learn to say “no.” It will feel uncomfortable at first, but it will also feel good – empowering. And it will free you up for the stuff you actually want to say “yes” to.”

I need to try these things. Wish me luck. And good luck to you, too!
