<p>Oh, you&#8217;ve heard me say that before? Yes, you have.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s not original with me.  The great &#8220;father of library science,&#8221; <a href="http://www.britannica.com/biography/Shiyali-Ramamrita-Ranganathan" target="_blank">S. R. Ranganathan</a>, <a href="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/s-_r-_ranganathan.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-6867"><img loading="lazy" data-attachment-id="6867" data-permalink="https://cherylbecker.wordpress.com/2016/03/02/the-ever-changing-library/s-_r-_ranganathan/" data-orig-file="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/s-_r-_ranganathan.jpg" data-orig-size="1514,2409" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.4&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;iPhone 5&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1353589925&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;4.13&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;320&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.05&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="S._R._Ranganathan" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/s-_r-_ranganathan.jpg?w=189" data-large-file="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/s-_r-_ranganathan.jpg?w=644" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-6867" src="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/s-_r-_ranganathan.jpg?w=189&#038;h=300" alt="S._R._Ranganathan" width="189" height="300" srcset="https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/s-_r-_ranganathan.jpg?w=189&amp;h=300 189w, https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/s-_r-_ranganathan.jpg?w=378&amp;h=600 378w, https://cherylbecker.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/s-_r-_ranganathan.jpg?w=94&amp;h=150 94w" sizes="(max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px" /></a>gave us his brilliant <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_laws_of_library_science" target="_blank">Five Laws</a>, which are still applicable today, with <a href="http://www.jdcc.edu/library/RFL.pdf" target="_blank">a little revision/modernizing</a>.  The fifth one, though &#8220;The library is a growing organism,&#8221; needs no revision. A library should be a continually changing, never static, institution. This sounds a lot like my mantra, that a library must respond to the needs of its community.</p>
<p>Recently (November 2015), OCLC published a compilation called <a href="http://www.oclc.org/content/dam/research/publications/2015/oclcresearch-library-in-life-of-user.pdf" target="_blank">The Library in the Life of the User: Engaging With People Where They Live and Learn</a>.  It is an important read, I think. The subtitle &#8220;engaging with people where they live and learn&#8221; seems like still another way of saying a library must respond to the needs of the community, and the library is a growing organism.  Chapter headings include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Reordering Ranganathan: Shifting User Behaviors, Shifting Priorities</li>
<li>What is Enough? Satisficing Information Needs</li>
<li>&#8220;If it&#8217;s too Inconvenient, I&#8217;m not Going After it:&#8221; Convenience as a Critical Factor</li>
<li>&#8220;I Always Stick With the First Thing that Comes up on Google:&#8221; Where People Go for Information, What they Use, and Why</li>
<li>Meeting the Expectations of the Community: The Engagement-Centered Library</li>
