But, just in case, let me tell you a little bit about it. Officially, it is  the research library that serves the United States Congress, but it is also essentially the national library of the United States. It also houses the U.S. Copyright Office, and collects most or all of the titles published in the United States, and does many many more things.</p>
<p>There have been 13 Librarians of Congress since the library began in 1802. All have been men, and most have not been professional librarians. All that has changed. On July 13, the Senate approved the <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/07/carla-hayden-is-librarian-of-congress/491267/" target="_blank">appointment of Carla Hayden</a> as the 14th Librarian of Congress. She is the first woman, and the first African American to hold the position. She is also the first professional librarian to be appointed in over 60 years.  And she is also well-qualified for the job.</p>
<p>Needless to say, librarians all over the country are happy with this appointment. Congratulations, Carla!</p>
