<![CDATA[Red Hat Insights in CloudForms]]>If you are using CloudForms, you might notice that there is a tab called Red Hat Insights.

What is Red Hat Insights? It’s a Software as a Service (SaaS) offering that helps you proactively identify and resolve technical risks in your IT infrastructure before they negatively impact your whole environment. Insights enables you to identify potential outages and fix things faster using verified solutions that are analyzed against Red Hat’s knowledge base. It has been included as a Technology Preview in CloudForms since version 4.0.

In order to take advantage of Insights, you need a registered CloudForms appliance, a registered Red Hat Enterprise Linux environment and either a Satellite or Red Hat Customer Portal connection. You also need to have Smart State Analysis working and configured based on the official documentation.

You then need to register all of your managed systems using the same account you used to register the CloudForms appliance. This is very important, because if the managed system is registered to a different account, then Insights in CloudForms will not see the managed systems.

You need to execute to following command on each of the managed systems:

subscription-manager register --auto-attach
yum install redhat-access-insights
redhat-access-insights --register

You should see a stream of output, and when you see “Upload completed successfully!” you are done.

You then create a new analysis profile in CloudForms that includes the Insights machine ID. First, copy the “sample” analysis profile into a new profile named “default” (This name is very important.)

In the new “default” profile, add the required file: /etc/redhat-access-insights/machine-id

Then, perform Smart State Analysis on the managed system…

…and verify that the file has been collected:

You can verify that your systems appear in the Insights tab by going to Red Hat Insights -> Systems

You have ten (10) free systems to use with Red Hat Insights, so take advantage of it, and see what insights you can learn about your environment.

Note that if you have any problems, you can un-register and re-register the managed system with Red Hat insights using:

redhat-access-insights --unregister
redhat-access-insights --force-reregister
