Monica Meyer, the mayor of Betterton, Maryland, died in 1980 while checking her town’s sewage tanks – she fell in and drowned in 15 feet of human waste.
An investigator on the scene surmised that she lost her footing and fell into the large vat. “It’s just like putty, and she didn’t have a chance to get out. It’s like quicksand,” he said.
