Those of us who love the English language have to admit to a bit of schizophrenia about the love affair. On the one hand, English is an utterly-flexible and ever-changing language, allowing near-infinite ways to communicate whatever you wish to express. On the other hand, its grammar consists of far more exceptions than constants, and its usage defies common sense.
Leave it to a non-native speaker of the language to perfectly capture the utter chaos of English. Gerard Nolst Trenité was born in Utrecht, Netherlands in 1870. Writing under the pseudonym Charivarius, this native Dutch speaker wrote a poem that expresses many of the frustrations experienced by anyone who tries to master English.
“The Chaos” first appeared as an appendix to his 1920 textbook Drop Your Foreign Accent: engelsche uitspraakoefeningen. The subtitle uses the pre-1947 Dutch spelling and translates as “English pronunciation exercises.”
The poem has been revised several times. The most complete version has 274 lines and appears below, along with a video that provides the pronunciation of all of the words.
Dearest creature in creation
Studying English pronunciation,
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse and worse.
I will keep you, Susy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy;
Tear in eye, your dress you’ll tear;
