The Sega Genesis was my very first console and with it came the blue blur, Sonic. Of course, I had two older siblings living with me at the time so, I rarely ever got to play, and when I did, I was always Tails. The best part about playing Tails was that I had no penalty for dying, yet I still dealt the same damage as sonic. I also remember having fun just exploring the levels and using Tails to try and find secrets. Now that I think of it,Tails was a great accessibility character. Someone who isn’t gaming literate or who has a disability could still play Tails and be useful without the responsibility of moving the game forward. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a way to play as Tails alone and go through the game just for fun. I know some people will look down on me for wanting a super easy mode, but sometimes I just want to explore without the pressure of death looming over me around every corner.

Okay, you’re going to make fun of me, but the best kid’s game that delivers on my ultra easy mode ideal is Angel Cat Sugar for the DS. This is not a very good game, but it still scratches that itch. The challenge doesn’t really come from enemies and you can’t die. The challenge comes from getting where you need to go with a limited amount of wing power. You go flying around the levels picking up the tools and collectibles you need to boost your flying strength and help your friends. It’s effing adorable! If the story was more like Ham Ham Heartbreak, then it would have been amazing, but like it is now, it’s just a lovable proof of concept.
