In preparation of this post, I went back and listened to some of the old theme songs to Inuyasha. Seriously, listen to the full version of Change the World. Try to ignore your bubbling nostalgia, and actually listen to how ridiculously cheesy it sounds. How did this show survive? I’ll tell you how, mass appeal. Unlike most shounen anime, Inuyasha’s main character was actually a girl, Kagome. The show is framed as a girl living her life before falling into a well, not as a demon living his life before finding a girl from the future. In Inuyasha, the future is normal, and the past is a foreign world. This subtle change in perspective puts a small but essential emphasis on Kagome’s character. Yeah, it get’s a little lost in later episodes, but the initial importance of Kagome as the central character helped to bring in a large female audience who probably wouldn’t have bothered if Inuyasha was the protagonist. Inuyasha is at it’s core a female fantasy catering to the same feeling that made the Twilight series so popular: a normal girl gets whisked away by a handsome supernatural man and has guys fighting for her affections. All the sword swinging and dangerous monsters are surprisingly secondary at the beginning and the driving narrative is a love story with a lot of cool action scenes. The best thing about Inuyasha is that the action and gore aren’t toned down for the female audience and the strong emotional turmoil of it’s characters isn’t dumbed down for the male audience. Yeah, some of the ideas aren’t executed well, and the show isn’t perfect, but you have to admit that there’s something in it for everyone.
