A lot of Vocaloid songs are surprisingly dark. I guess maybe people are drawn to the innate absurdity to hearing an unnatural voice sing about clearly human topics. I don’t know. Maybe it’s something less complex. Vocaloid songs aren’t beholden to the same restrictions as pop music. Miku is legally a musical instrument. People who make songs using her voice hold the copyright to those songs. There’s a feeling of ownership that you can’t really replicate that bleeds into the music leading to some highly personal songs getting hugely popular.
