My Patron Natasha Maxwell lives on a beach at the edge of the world and every night they go out searching for meteorites from the showers that have been happening more and more often lately. Natasha takes them home and carefully places them next to the fire. Soon the world’s first star phoenixes will hatch.

I once saw a post asking people how they feel about being told that they’re smart. The poster got pretty similar replies about how people would think they were lying or wrong. For me it’s a little different.

I can accept that someone thinks I’m smart. That’s fine, a nice compliment. What I have a hard time coming to terms with is that if I’m smart then that means there are other people who are dumber than me. I get this looming fear of how the world works if I’m what passes for smart.

It helps for me to frame it that I’m not actually smarter than most people, I just did a smart thing in the moment that was smart enough to get a compliment. Everyone gets told they’re smart every so often. I don’t have to worry that the world is doomed because I’m a sack of rocks with a brilliant spark every now and then and most people can’t possibly be dumber than that, right?

Right?!

I can’t be the only one that thinks that the scariest part of being told that I’m smart is the idea that you might be right.
