I know that what I say comes from a position of privilege, that I’ve never had a dangerous interaction with the police, but it would be wrong of me not to say anything to support those people who have.

When I was little, I was told to go to the police if I was in trouble, that there were strangers around me who might hurt me, but I was always safe if a police officer was around. I grew up watching Family Matters and buddy cop movies. I really bought into the idea that the police were there to protect me.

But I slowly came to understand that cops aren’t patrolling to protect people. They’re patrolling to protect money.
