EDITORIAL

With finals right around the corner, a sense of dread and trepidation passes all over a college student’s body. Finals are such a consequential time of the year because they have the ability to make or break a student’s grade in a particular class.

The dread, and never- ending nerves, surrounding finals causes students to not perform to the best of their abilities.

Students focus too much time and energy on the negative emotions associated with finals, and not on the implementation of strategies that would ensure success. This leads to students not performing at their best.

The most pressing issue around the end of the semester is the procrastination that goes along with it. It is far too common for assignments that are due at the end of the semester to be put off until the “Eleventh Hour.”

Whether it be final papers, presentations or projects, all of us in college put undue pressure on ourselves by choosing to put off assignments until the last possible moment. Finals time is stressful enough without having to play catch up because assignments that should have been done months ago have fallen by the wayside.

There are many ways for finals time to become one more full of relaxation than fear.

Do not put off assignments until the end of the semester:

Allowing assignments to be more spaced out will allow students to not have to stress about having to complete tasks at the very last minute.

Prepare for finals all throughout the semester:

The idea behind this tip is that the information will have more time to be analyzed, and the student will avoid having to cram their finals preparation into a very small period of time.

Get a good night’s sleep, and eat well heading into finals week:

All of your finals preparation will be for nothing if the right food is not being eaten, and if you don’t sleep enough leading up to finals week.

Scientific evidence has shown there is a positive correlation between the hours of sleep and the ability to retain information over the following days.

Try not to put too much stock in finals:

While finals certainly are consequential, they are not the be-all-end-all. It is important to do well on the coursework during the entire semester. In turn, the success of a student on their final assignments of the semester will not have such an adverse impact on their overall grade.

Good luck on finals!
