Special Correspondent

President Trump tweeted at 12:54 a.m., Oct. 2, “Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”

In a fast-paced day of breaking news, President Trump entered quarantine and cancelled all public appearances. It is not clear how the president contracted the virus and when he might have been exposed.

The news resonated for many students during midterms, and they shared their reactions.

Sarah Panza, a senior and a Math QUEST major, said, “I think it’s a great example of how we shouldn’t listen to Trump when he downplays COVID and mask wearing!”

Said sophomore Jasper Macatulad, a finance major, “The whole situation is very ironic to me. Because in the last debate, he was making fun of Biden for wearing a mask. And now he got [it] for not taking extra precautions.”

This news comes after Tuesday’s first presidential debate against Democratic candidate Joe Biden. The former vice president tested negative for coronavirus following the news about Trump.

President Trump, 74, is in the at-risk category for those who contract COVID-19 because of his age and weight, which is categorized as obese.

The virus has killed more than 200,000 people nationwide and more than 1 million worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins. This event comes when President Trump downplays the severity of the pandemic; at the debate, he mocked Biden for wearing masks.

President Trump has often appeared in public events without donning a mask, despite CDC advice to wear a mask.

“I hope that American citizens can learn from this,” Macatulad, the finance major, said.
