FDU alumnus Seth Greenberg and ESPN’s College Gameday team celebrated the upcoming basketball season, highlighting Friday night’s festivities for Homecoming at Home. 

Greenberg joined Jay Bilas, Rece Davis, and LaPhonso Ellis from the College Gameday team in interviewing Knight coaches Greg Herenda and Angelika Szumilo via Zoom from their offices. 

College Gameday is a wildly popular show hosted by Greenberg, Bilas, Davs, and Ellis on Saturday mornings during the college basketball season at campuses around the country. 

Homecoming at Home replaces Homecoming this year due to the pandemic. Instead of having the annual celebration, the event held this past week was shared virtually on Zoom. 

Greenberg, 64, graduated from FDU in 1978 with a degree in broadcast journalism and has returned to his alma mater over the years to broadcast FDU basketball games, but this year could be different due to the pandemic.

“I hope to be back at ‘Harvard on the Hackensack’ to call (games), but if not, most likely I’ll be in the studio,” Greenberg said. 

The season is still a big question mark right now with the postponement of fall sports, but both FDU teams are participating in weekly training. The coaches are hoping  they can get a firm schedule that  does not change every week.

 “Every day the schedule changes with our opponents,” Herenda said. 

Coach Szumilo added: “Our schedule as well changes almost every week depending on the circumstances.”

 With a rise of COVID-19 cases in New Jersey over the last few weeks, plans continue to evolve on what the next step is for college basketball.

Herenda was at the center of the court at the (empty) Rothman Center during the celebration and reminded people to wear masks and social distance. 

The Northeast Conference has yet to update the plan for the basketball season — along with fall sports and all the other spring sports.
