Today’s update will focus on an initiative in Newark to help the homeless get off the streets during the winter months.
Many of the homeless in the Newark area use Newark Penn Station as a place for shelter during the winter months, but there is a new plan to help the 1,800+ homeless people in the city, according to NJ.com.
Shipping containers are being converted into a new type of homeless shelter. These containers will not only include a safe and warm place to sleep, but bathrooms with showers, transportation to the site and help for mental health and substance abuse, NJ.com continued.
The site is slated to open in early February.
COVID-19 Numbers
As of this morning, there are 5,999 new COVID-19 cases in NJ and 540 of those are in Bergen County.
