I am currently a PhD student in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at Indiana University. As a science and technology studies student, I am presently engaged in the ethnographic study of toxicity in competitive, online video games. I conduct fieldwork in games such as Overwatch and Minecraft, and I observe how online groups emerge around the intersection of specific interests to perform as a community through IRC communication platforms like Discord. My perspective is shaped by critical feminist studies of labor and workplaces, as well as postcolonial and decolonial perspectives of technology. I hold a master’s degree in media studies from the University of Oregon. I have previously published on the concept of ‘genderlessness’ in the Minecraft universe, as well as anthropological perspectives of digital labor. I am often found on Twitter @ibull.
