As a part of the VR Developer course I’m taking on Udacity.com, I’m required to write a blog post reviewing a VR experience. I’ve chosen to review one of the experiences I’ve enjoyed the most so far even though it’s a little flawed.

The title of the game is VR Fantasy, and can be found on the Play Store HERE.

If you’re familiar with my blog, you’ll know that I’m a huge RPG fan, particularly dungeon crawlers, so I was thrilled when I had first picked up my cardboard and found this title.

What It Got Right

For a simple pick up and play experience, this app got pretty much everything right.

The handpainted environments are pretty (if slightly unpolished), and do a lot to allow the player feel immersed while also remembering they’re playing a game. The sound is also a compliment, with nice audio both for environmental ambiance and sfx.

Combat is also straightforward, with a simple touch to attack mechanic.

What It Got Wrong

Again, this is a fairly simple (and free) experience, so I’m not going to criticize it too harshly, however…

The movement is pretty awful. It uses a UI button displayed near the player’s feet which must be looked at to be toggled on or off. This, as far as I can tell, is not explained anywhere, and took some time to figure out. Additionally, movement is painfully slow. A speed twice as fast would probably do.

Overall

The game is pretty simple, and has some nice visuals. However, the controls are a lacking and can be a bit cumbersome. However, for a completely free game, I think VR Fantasy probably deserves a solid four stars for allowing players to immerse themselves in a dungeon and battle slimes, something RPG veterans from all walks can appreciate.
