The next X-Men film will take place in the 1990s, according to franchise producer Simon Kinberg. Kinberg told ComingSoon.net that the seventh feature film in the franchise will be set during the decade, best known as the era of grunge, Beanie Babies and X-Men: The Animated Series.

The period setting for the film is one of the few details fans know about X-Men 7 thus far. It’s reportedly entering production sometime this year, however, although longtime director Bryan Singer may not return. The new movie won’t be a direct follow-up to this month’s 1980s-set X-Men Apocalypse, in theaters May 27; instead, it will launch a new trilogy of X-Men stories.

Also in development are three spinoffs: a new Wolverine film, an adaptation of X-Force and The New Mutants, the cast of which director Josh Boone teased last week. The X-Men are also coming to TV thanks to cable channel FX: Legion is currently in production.
