In a press release that has been translated from Japanese by Gematsu, it was revealed the third entry in the series proved to be most popular in North America and Europe, where it shipped 1.5 million and 1 million copies respectively. In Japan and Asia, it shipped 500,000.

It’s important to note that these figures don’t necessarily represent sales to customers, and could instead by related to units shipped to retail. GameSpot has contacted Bandai Namco for clarification.

In July 2015, series developer From Software revealed the original Dark Souls, which was released in 2011, and its post-launch expansion Artorias of the Abyss, sold more than 5.6 million units.

Dark Souls 2 sales, meanwhile reached over 2.9 million worldwide. This figure includes sales of the 2014 re-release Scholar of the First Sin.

Dark Souls 3 received a score of 8 in GameSpot’s review, in which critic Mike Mahardy said, "This is the essence of Dark Souls III: periods of doubt, followed by great reward. The journey may be rocky, but there’s a throne waiting at the end."

From Software president Hidetaka Miyazaki, who directed Dark Souls, Dark Souls 3, and its PS4-exclusive spin-off Bloodborne, has said he doesn’t plan on making any more Dark Souls titles in the immediate future. The studio has reportedly started work on a new IP and, much to the dismay of fans, isn’t very keen on remaking Demon’s Souls either.
