With the DOOM reboot out in the wilds, it is time to see how well the game fares on current-generation consoles. As part of its technical analysis and videogame reviews, Digital Foundry has released a new video to showcase its findings on how well DOOM is optimized for play on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

According to the publication, Sony Corp.’s (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation 4 version outperforms Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox One platform in several aspects. The first-person shooter from ID Software is seemingly suffering from frame-rate dips on Xbox One in several sections of the single-player campaign. The PlayStation 4 version, on the other hand, has proven to be a fabulous release with a constant stream of 60 frames-per-second and very few frame-rate issues. Not to say that Sony’s console has zero frame-rate dips; however, they are minor and that too in only a few heavy action sequences.

In terms of resolution, DOOM has no issues with sticking to the glorious 1080p threshold throughout the campaign on PS4. The Xbox One version, however, has noticeable problems in trying to hold on to full-HD and drops down on many occasions. Suffice to say, players will not have any complaints regarding image quality on PS4. There are no rigid animations to be found on PS4, and the controls work fluid throughout the single-player progression.

Note that both console versions of DOOM are coded to take advantage of dynamic resolution scaling in order to render the game at 1080p. Overall, the Xbox One version still offers a fairly good experience, but falls short when compared to the quality and stability of the PS4 version.

DOOM is now available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Former Design Director from Epic Games, Cliff Bleszinski, praised the game for its weapons, controls, and “satanic stuff”. With that said, he also pointed out that ID Software had perhaps focused too much on “executions”.
