Star Fox Zero is a great game – we gave it 8 out of 10 – but it possibly didn’t make the impact that Nintendo had hoped for. Following a disappointing delay which robbed the Wii U of its biggest festive hit, the game met with a mixed reaction online, with many citing the awkward controls and short length as reasons for their displeasure.

As a result, the game is likely to go down as something of a rough gem in Nintendo’s library, but Shigeru Miyamoto thinks people have perhaps been too quick to judge the game. In an interview with Game Informer conducted during E3, the legendary game designer singled out Star Fox Zero as the Wii U title he thinks people should revisit:

I think personally Star Fox is a really fun game if you sit down and play it. I think, for example, an elementary school kid who plays it without any preconceived notions, I think it would be really fun for them. I think it’s also really, really fun for siblings to play it together.

Senior product marketing manager of Nintendo of America Bill Trinen – a man who is rarely far away from Miyamoto at such events – said that Pikmin 3 was his pick as the console’s most underrated release:

Personally, I think Pikmin 3 is the most amazing game on Wii U. It’s probably one of my favorite games in the last six or seven years. I think that hardly anyone realizes that the multiplayer bingo battle mode was literally the best new multiplayer mode that has been created since Smash Bros. It is so much fun.

Miyamoto replied:

Pikmin is the kind of game that you have to play maybe three times to get the full effect, but you know, people don’t have a lot of time, so they just clear the stage and just move on. Games are becoming more of a consumable product, and it’s getting harder and harder for people to let a game to sink in and enjoy leisurely.

What do you make of this picks, and what would you say is the Wii U’s most underappreciated game?
