Game’s director says they cannot add to the expensive special edition

Earlier this month, we learned that Square Enix’s long-awaited role-playing game, Final Fantasy 15, will feature an optional season pass for players looking to extend the game through downloadable content. Today the company has revealed that players who purchased the massive $270 Ultimate Collector’s Edition of Final Fantasy 15 will have to pay extra for that season pass.

This tidbit comes via a Twitter Q&A with Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata. When asked by a fan if the Ultimate Collector’s Edition would include the season pass, Tabata responded:

"sadly no & we looked into making more UCE but we were told we still can’t."

For sale exclusively on the Square Enix Online Store, the Final Fantasy 15 Ultimate Collector’s Edition costs $269.99. It includes such bonuses as a 192 page hardcover art book, a statue of main character Noctis, copies of the full-length film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15 as well as the game’s anime spin-off Brotherhood and bonus in-game content such as a unique weapon and a "travel pack."

Initially, Square Enix advertised that there would only be 30,000 copies of the Ultimate Collector’s Edition available worldwide. Those 30,000 copies sold out within 30 minutes. Tabata later confirmed that more copies of the special edition would be produced, but Square Enix clarified that it couldn’t guarantee that they would be ready by Final Fantasy 15‘s launch date. If you go to the Square Enix Online Store today and try to purchase the Ultimate Collector’s Edition, you can only add your e-mail address to a waiting list.

The Final Fantasy 15 season pass will include at least six pieces of downloadable content, three "content packs" and three "episodes." They include DLC devoted to the characters Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto, as well as a "Holiday Pack." The season pass will be included in the digital premium edition of the game, which can currently be pre-ordered on the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store for $84.99.

After a delay that was confirmed this week, Final Fantasy 15 will finally be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on Nov. 29.
