Each month, Microsoft makes two games free for Xbox Live Gold members to download for a limited time on both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 .

Since November 2015 the two free Xbox 360 games have also been backwards compatible with the Xbox One, meaning owners of Microsoft’s latest console can effectively get four free games a month.

The games are yours to keep even if you drop your Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Xbox One

Earthlock: Festival of Magic: 1 September – 30 September

While Games with Gold usually features older titles, Earthlock is actually a brand spanking new release. An turn-based RPG by Norwegian devs Snowcastle, this colourful adventure will see you battling all manner of odd creatures in a world called Umbra. The planet has stopped spinning, which has undoubtedly caused a few problems for the populace (and their sleeping patterns).

The game won’t be free forever though, so if you fancy giving it a whirl without spending a penny be sure to pick it up before the end of the month.

Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China: 16 September – 15 October

Giving the admittedly tired Assassin’s Creed franchise a trilogy of 2.5D spin-offs sounded like a good idea on paper, but critics found them to be fairly middling on the whole. Still, if you’re a fan of Ubisoft’s stealth action blockbusters, this offers some more lore set in the globe trotting era-spanning series.

This instalment (which was followed by episodes set in India and Russia) follows the adventures of Shao Jun – a former apprentice of fan favourite protagonist Ezio – as she avenges the death of her family.

Xbox 360

Forza Horizon: 1 September – 15 September

Speaking of franchise spin-offs, Xbox owners will also get their hands on this sister title to the Forza Motorsport racing sim games. The Horizon series takes itself a bit less seriously, with a lean towards more reckless driving and an open world to explore. With Forza Horizon 3 releasing later in the same month, this is a great opportunity to give the series a try.

If the 300-strong collection of drivable cars doesn’t grab you, perhaps being able to race against helicopters and planes might encourage you to give it a whirl?

Mirror’s Edge: 16 September – 30 September

Its recent sequel might not have been everything fans wanted , but the original Mirror’s Edge captured a lot of imaginations when it first came out back in 2008.

A first-person free-running game set in a futuristic sterile police state, its mechanics can occasionally be a little rough (particularly during combat),but in general it’s incredibly satisfying when you manage to deftly chain a series of death-defying leaps and climbs together.
