The Fault in Our Stars scribes are joined by longtime X-Men producer

New Mutants, the upcoming X-Men spinoff film, now has writers attached, according to The Hollywood Reporter: Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, best known for films like The Fault in Our Stars and The Spectacular Now.

With their background in films about teens — as opposed to "teen films" — Neustadter and Weber sound like a good fit for the teen-centric X-Men story. New Mutants stars a pack of gifted youngsters as they try to get acquainted with their new powers. At the same time, they’re navigating their teenage years, providing some added challenges. Neither a cast nor release date is set in stone yet, making the writing team among the few people officially attached to the project.

Simon Kinberg, producer of the X-Men cinematic franchise, will return to work on the project, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed. New Mutants’ director is also in place: Josh Boone, who directed The Fault in Our Stars, is heading up the film. Others expected to appear include James McAvoy, returning in the Professor Xavier role, and young actresses like Ana Taylor-Joy, Alexandra Shipp and, reportedly, Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams.

Also on the docket for the X-Men universe is Legion, an upcoming FX show that’s set to air next year. It’s a spinoff of New Mutants that features David Haller, Professor Xavier’s son.
