Will the theme be as hum-friendly?

Ramin Djawadi, a veteran composer of film, television and video games, is handling the orchestral score for Gears of War 4, publisher Microsoft Studios announced today.

Djawadi is perhaps best known for his work scoring every episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones, including its stirring and catchy title theme. He told the Associated Press that he worked to make the Gears 4 score "very different" from that of the beloved fantasy series — "even [though] we’re still using a lot of orchestra and percussion."

"Gears 4 is definitely action-driven," Djawadi said in a behind-the-scenes featurette that you can watch above. "What really appealed to me, too, is that there is an underlying emotional throughline in the game that I really like."

Djawadi said that he chose "a little bit more of an electronic sound, embedded with the orchestra" for the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) forces. He went with a "darker" feel for the Swarm, the new enemies in Gears 4.

In addition to his work on Game of Thrones, Djawadi’s resume includes films such as Warcraft and Pacific Rim, and games like Medal of Honor Warfighter. His video game roots go back to the 1990s — the AP reports that Djawadi got his start as a sound technician at System Shock and Thief creator Looking Glass Studios.

You may have taken particular notice of Djawadi’s composing chops in Game of Thrones’ sixth-season finale, "The Winds of Winter," which began with a tense sequence in which a number of characters prepared for a trial in the city of King’s Landing. Djawadi, along with director Miguel Sapochnik and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, decided to go with a haunting piano-heavy backing track called "Light of the Seven."

Gears of War 4 is set for release Oct. 11 on Windows PC and Xbox One. For more on the game, check out our extensive feature from E3.
