It’s not all action, all the time

Titanfall 2 developer Respawn Entertainment likes to describe the game’s single-player campaign as a series of "action blocks," but the studio strings together those chunks with a variety of slower-paced sequences, according to a new developer diary.

For one thing, there are a few sections that offer "light puzzles that actually require you to stop and think about the environment and look around," said lead game designer Jason McCord. (To be clear, these aren’t Uncharted-esque mirror moving puzzles; McCord was using the word "light" to refer to the challenge level of the puzzle mechanics.)

The video contains footage of a platforming section in which the player, as pilot Jack Cooper, must fire their energy weapon at hatches on either side of a chasm before they can jump between the structures. That’s another defining aspect of Titanfall 2’s campaign: You won’t always have your trusty titan, a Vanguard-class mech known as BT-7274, at your side.

"Because we want to build the relationship between you and BT, we often do things where we split you guys up," said McCord.

Respawn also discussed elements like boss battles with enemies who have some personality, and slow-paced segments of exploring the environment as Cooper. Of course, said senior game designer Chris ‘Soupy’ Dionne, the player and BT are "stronger together."

Titanfall 2 is set for release Oct. 28 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. For more details on the campaign, check out our hands-on impressions.
