The battle between the Xbox One Scorpio and PS4 Pro rages on, as Microsoft compares its new console to a high-end PC worth thousands of dollars.

With the PS4 Pro recently launching worldwide to largely positive reviews, Microsoft has been hyping Project Scorpio ahead of its 2017 release date.

Without revealing full Xbox One Scorpio specs, Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg described it as the “most powerful console you’ve ever seen”.

“It will bring these really true 4K, really incredible visual games that we’ve never seen before on the console,” he told Xbox FanFest attendees.

“People who have spent thousands of dollars on a high-end PC are getting that experience.

“How do we bring that to scale in a console in your living room? That’s a big part of what Project Scorpio is about.”

The Xbox One Scorpio is being touted as the most powerful console ever created. It boasts 6 teraflops of GPU, which will deliver 4K gaming and support virtual reality.

It’s so powerful that Microsoft recently had a dig at Sony’s PS4 Pro console, telling one site the device won’t be able to handle true 4K and that the Xbox One Scorpio is aiming higher.

“I think there are a lot of caveats they’re giving customers right now around 4K. They’re talking about checkerboard rendering and up-scaling and things like that.

“They’re going to be able to decide to take that six teraflops of power and do what they think is best for their game. But I know that 4.2 teraflops is not enough to do true 4K.”

But despite talk that Scorpio would feature virtual reality support, it looks like Sony has the VR battle sewn up for now.

Microsoft believes the technology needs to gain mainstream acceptance before it really takes off.

“I don’t think the creators in the game space have yet found – well, they haven’t obviously perfected the craft of building VR games.” Microsoft’s Phil Spencer said.

“It’s so early, I think we’re a couple of years before we’ll really see that hit mainstream.”

Xbox On Scorpio will be available in late 2017, although there’s a chance it could launch earlier, as Microsoft is ahead of schedule with its production.
