From our Review: What’s more entertaining than an animated story of a boy and his quest? A stop-motion animated story of a boy and his quest. From the studio that created ParaNorman, Coraline, and The Boxtrolls comes Laika’s newest film and sweeping 3-D epic, Kubo and the Two Strings. It’s not just the story that’s big either, but also the people behind the camera. From composer Dario Marianelli, to first time director, president and CEO of Laika Travis Knight, to the voices of Academy Award-winning and nominated actors like Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara, and Ralph Fiennes, Kubo and the Two Strings goes above and beyond both on and off screen.

From our Review: The film opens with quiet aggression. The two leads taking part in their first bank robbery. The motivation is unknown but we’re already interested because cinematographer Giles Nuttgens has introduced viewers to three main elements of the film: brothers Tanner and Toby, bank robberies, and West Texas. With a 360 pan of what appears to be a small deserted town, graffiti tagged on buildings, empty storefronts, and boarded up windows, viewers are immediately dropped into the main characters’ world. A beat up blue sports car drives slowly, thoughtfully through the blank streets until it reaches a bank where a woman is fumbling with her keys to open shop. This is one of a set number of robberies that audiences will witness over the course of the film.
