Sometimes playing Pokemon Go results in augmented reality that’s too good to be true, and that happened to me on a recent trip to Japan. While there covering a trailer launch event for Ghost in the Shell, I took a side trip to Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama outside Kyoto, where something magical appeared.

In my quest to find a Farfetch’d during my brief time in Japan (which did eventually happen, thank goodness), I played Pokemon Go pretty much my entire time overseas. That meant I had the app open while trekking the long hike up to the top of the mountain where all the Japanese macaques hang out at Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama, and noticed that the mountain was spawning Mankeys.

It was too perfect a situation to be true, so of course I couldn’t resist introducing the Pokemon to its real-life counterparts. Check out my AR photos in the gallery below:

Plenty of Pokemon align with real-life animals, but this situation was so hilarious and so perfect (what are the odds that the monkey mountain also would spawn Mankeys?) that I wanted to share it with everyone else. And while we’re talking about moments too good to be true in Pokemon Go, here’s a look back at 53 perfectly timed Pokemon Go screenshots:

Terri Schwartz is Entertainment Editor at IGN and arguably still spends too much time playing Pokemon Go. (Hey, at least she also caught a Farfetch’d in Japan.) Talk to her on Twitter at @Terri_Schwartz.
