It’s a nod to films of cinema past

Legendary Pictures has announced the full titles for the sequels to Pacific Rim and Godzilla.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be directed by Michael Dougherty, the studio announced today, and will be released on March 22, 2019. Pacific Rim: Uprising, which is being helmed by Steven S. DeKnight, will be released a year earlier on Feb. 23, 2018.

It’s interesting to note that the name of the Godzilla sequel shares the same title as the North American remake that was released in 1956. Legendary did not indicate if that meant anything specifically for the sequel, but the title was clearly inspired by the 1956 version of the film.

Pacific Rim: Uprising, which was reportedly called Pacific Rim: Maelstrom prior to this announcement, is currently filming in Australia. The film stars Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor John Boyega as the son of Idris Elba’s character, Stacker Pentecost. Charlie Hunnam will also reprise his role as pilot Raleigh Becket.

The press release also announced that producer Herb W. Gains, who worked on Watchmen with director Zack Snyder, would be overseeing both films, as well as the studio’s upcoming film adaptation of Pokemon’s Detective Pikachu.
