Quake Champions will be free to play for everyone, with a pay option to get access to all of the characters.

Speaking with Polygon, id Software creative director Tim Willits revealed the business model for Quake Champions, which he previously described as a “really hard problem.” He said Ranger is selectable by anyone, while those who purchase the Champions Pack for a fixed price can pick any character in the game.

“At its core, it’s a free-to-play game, with the option to buy the Champion Pack and just get in and play with all the Champions. There are a number of Quake players that just want to play their Quake, right?

“And they are familiar with the business model of our previous games, and they are totally fine. ‘I want to buy the game. I want to start playing. I want to have access to all the Champions.'”

Quake Champions won’t split the user base when it comes to maps or anything else. Willits said the only difference is access to characters.

He also mentioned that in-game currency will let people check out characters other than Ranger for a limited time in Quake Champions.

Currently, Bethesda is accepting signups for the closed beta for Quake Champions.
