As caught by Eurogamer, Street Fighter IV is coming back. Microsoft’s adding it to the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility library, joining an increasingly extensive list of old classics (and forgettables), ranging from the entire Bioshock series and Gears of War, to fellow fighters like Tekken 6 and King of Fighters 2012.

But the relevance of this news isn’t just a matter of an old title being accessible on new hardware. Street Fighter IV, in the face of the criticisms levied at its successor, has recently been seeing something of a revival. As of about five months ago, Japan was still very much into IV. Last month, we interviewed Javits about the continued popularity of the game as well. In fact, CCG 2017 is explicitly a Street Fighter IV revival event.

It’s uncertain whether the updates to it, such as the Ultra release, will be similarly added.

Street Fighter V has been patched repeatedly thus far, but still faces significant criticism — the temporary removal of “invincible” dragon punches being a major alteration of a formula that’s lasted since Street Fighter II. The next major patch is expected in April.
