Earlier this month it was revealed that Sony was moving ahead with a film focusing on Venom, the alien parasite who first appeared Spider-Man comic books. It has now been reported that the movie will start shooting this year.

According to a posting on the industry casting site MyEntertainmentWorld, the Venom movie will enter production in the fall. This is a year ahead of its October 2018 release date. Intriguingly, the site has the movie listed as "action/horror/sci-fi", implying it might have a slightly different tone to other superhero movies.

It is currently unknown if there will be any connection between the Venom film and this year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Sony holds the movie rights to Spider-Man and associated characters, and Marvel had to strike a deal with them to allow Spidey to become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Homecoming and last year’s Captain America: Civil War.

Plans for a Venom movie actually predate the Marvel deal, and the film was originally intended to be part of the ongoing Spider-Man franchise that starred Andrew Garfield. This series ended after just two movies.

The Venom film is set to be directed by Alex Kurtzman, who is helming this summer’s reboot of The Mummy. He is also the co-writer of the first two Star Trek reboot movies, and is producing the upcoming show Star Trek: Discovery.
