Let’s play a game

American Gods is still introducing its army of gods to viewers and in the show’s sophomore episode, viewers will get to meet the series’ most misfortunate: Czernobog.

Described as “an elderly man with a vaguely Eastern European accent, another of Wednesday’s closest allies,” he is perhaps best known for a fateful game of checkers he plays with Shadow Moon. Before playing, Czernobog (Peter Stormare) agrees to join Wednesday’s side in the upcoming battle between the old and new gods if Shadow wins. But if Czernobog emerges the victor, he gets to knock Shadow’s “brains out with a hammer.”

The scene being described can be seen below, ahead of the episode’s airing on Sunday. Prior to this clip, Starz also released the episode’s opening scene, which introduces one of the more memorable gods, Mr. Nancy. The second episode will also introduce one of the most beloved new gods, but who that is will remain a secret for now.

American Gods airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
