Are Blizzard playing summer games with us?
The latest update to Overwatch‘s public test servers appears to be internally referred to as “Doomfist / Summer Games”, referencing a long-rumored new hero and the return of the game’s first major event.
Following the PTR’s latest update, some players experienced crashes when using its new highlight saving feature. According to users on Reddit and the Overwatch forum, subsequent crash logs refer to the current version of the game as “1.13.0.0 Doomfist / Summer Games”. The reference has subsequently been removed from the logs.
Game director Jeff Kaplan has previously said that the Summer Games event – which began on August 2 last year – could return.
Doomfist, on the other hand, is a character whose backstory has been elaborated on after a positive fan reaction, but Blizzard has never formally said that he, she or it would become a playable hero.
It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that this is a joke on Blizzard’s part – Kaplan himself has said that Doomfist is a creation more of fans than the studio itself.
That hasn’t stopped actor Terry Crews repeatedly petitioning that he be allowed to play the character.
Overwatch has traditionally aimed to add something new every month – this month we received the new Lunar Colony map. Keep an eye on IGN to find out if July or August’s patch lives up to that hidden name.
