It took more than a year, but No Man’s Sky players are now crossing paths in-game. The game’s new multiplayer update allows intergalactic travelers to run into each other — a feature they’ve waited for since prior to its launch.

Atlas Rises, the latest free update for the game, adds visual indications that there are other players in the area, allowing up to 16 players to voice chat. There’s not much else available in multiplayer yet, but that there’s a way to make the No Man’s Sky experience a little less lonely is enough for many fans.

This past weekend, a player documented their first run-in with another player on Reddit to the tune of nearly 2,000 upvotes and 450 comments. Even more special: The players, DesignationG and Robe_meny82, met just minutes after the expansion launched.

Videos are coming up on YouTube, with players streaming their first multiplayer experiences.

The game’s lack of promised multiplayer at launch was one of several complaints players had with No Man’s Sky, and it was the one that caused the biggest stir. Although players could somehow come across the same planets — despite there being quintillions of them — they quickly found that there was no way to actually run into each other on them.

This is just the initial implementation of multiplayer in No Man’s Sky, so we’ll see if we’ll be able to interact further with other travelers as the game continues to evolve.
